A. J. Styles tweeted after defeating Grayson Waller on last week’s NXT: “Enjoyed my time at #WWENXT 2.0 greatly. The environment, the talent, and the fans are something special. Looking forward to seeing some of these Superstars on #WWERaw and #Smackdown and who knows, maybe I’ll be in an @WWENXT ring again!"
With the Christmas and New Year's holiday breaks and the recent COVID outbreaks, WWE was left a little short-handed as far as backstage producers and even some talent goes. According to Fightful.com the producers for the December 27th episode of RAW were Petey Williams, Shane Helms, Molly Holly, Abyss, and Jason Jordan. The producers for the January 1st "Day 1" pay-per-view event were Abyss, Shane Helms, Kenny Dykstra, Adam Pearce, Michael Hayes, Shawn Daivari, T. J. Wilson, and Jamie Noble.
As always, Pat McAfee was on point with his SmackDown commentary last Friday night. When the graphic came up showing who's in the Women’s Royal Rumble Match, McAfee exclaimed, "That's Mickie James, the Impact Knockouts champion, she's going to have an axe to grind with the garbage that happened in the past!" Days after getting fired in April of last year, James received a special delivery at home: her belongings from WWE...in a black trash bag. In a tweet directed at Vince McMahon, she told him she received her "care package" along with the photo and a sarcastic thank you. Stephanie McMahon and Triple H both publicly addressed the controversy and apologized to James on behalf of the company, noting that the person involved is no longer employed. In fact, WWE fired two individuals: long-time employee and Senior VP of Talent Relations Mark Carrano as well as Nicole Zeoli, the Director of Talent Relations. James, following the news of the firings, said she was sorry that a thoughtless and tone deaf act would cost someone their job but she was not sorry that she had the courage to ensure it would not happen ever again to someone who gets released. And while AEW smashed open the forbidden door, it looks like WWE opened that forbidden door just slightly to offer an olive branch to James to appear at this year's “Royal Rumble”, an offer which was accepted. "Y'all talk about doors like you're doing big things...Bitch I raise the BAR and kick out the ceiling. Because that's what legends do," James wrote on Instagram. She added that after Saturday's “Hard To Kill”, she's taking herself, her boots, and her Impact Knockouts title all the way to the “Royal Rumble” with the final destination being “WrestleMania”. Impact Executive Vice President Scott D'Amore said that Mickie has the company's blessing to carry the Knockouts Title into the “Royal Rumble” as long as she defeated Deonna Purrazzo on Saturday night, which she did. "And, as you saw, @WWE respects her as a World Champion," D'Amore tweeted. "WWE wanted it, Mickie wanted it, and Impact Wrestling’s philosophy is always to work with other major promotions to create buzz for the fans. Everything is signed and agreed with WWE and Impact Wrestling – the only question is whether or not Mickie will enter one of WWE’s most historic annual matches as the reigning Knockouts World Champion," D'Amore added. Meanwhile, Nick Aldis, Mickie's husband and former NWA champion, said that he wants to say how proud he is of his wife for once again just hitting the ground running and proving that you can't stop true top level talent if they're all business like her. He also gave props to NWA, Impact Wrestling, and WWE for making this happen.
Impact Knockouts champion Mickie James was a guest on "The Ariel Helwani Show" last week to discuss her surprise inclusion in WWE's "Royal Rumble". Asked point blank how she felt about getting the call, James said, "Shocked, very shocked." She noted that the company never went out of their way to do something like this, especially when it comes to women's wrestling. James said that she still maintained a good relationship with everyone at WWE and they had apologized over and over again regarding the trash bag incident. She said that it's super cool to be able to do this and hopefully it opens to future possibilities. "It's weird place to be sitting in. It's amazing what can happen in a year," she quipped. She said that originally it was John Laurinaitis who called Scott D'Amore to pitch the idea and then D'Amore called her to see what she thought about it. Originally, her appearance at the Rumble was going to be kept as a surprise but they wanted the big announcement and she didn't know they were going to do it on "WWE Friday Night SmackDown" on the eve of Impact's "Hard To Kill" pay-per-view. James said the announcement worked out better at the end of the day because a lot of people thought that she was going to lose the title to Deonna Purrazzo at "Hard To Kill" the next day but now she gets to show up in St Louis still as the champion. She said she was grateful that WWE acknowledged her as the Impact Knockouts champion on SmackDown, noting that it's very rare that they would do something like that. "It felt amazing. It shows a level of respect and gratitude. It was a cool move from their part and it's cool to be able to represent Impact," James told Helwani. Asked if this is a one-time deal, James skirted the question and instead asked Helwani what if she wins? Then she gets to go to WrestleMania. She hopes that she will be carrying the title coming down the aisle at the Rumble and fans will get to see the "Hardcore Country" Mickie James and not the WWE version of herself. James also discussed at length the trash bag incident and said that Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, John Laurinaitis, and Vince McMahon all called to personally apologize for what happened. You can see her full appearance by clicking here.
Charlie Haas was injured in his match against Josh Alexander at the Impact Wrestling TV tapings in Dallas, TX on January 9th. He was stretchered to the back after being "knocked loopy". It was reported that he was up and moving around after getting to the back.
Charlie Haas, who made his Impact Wrestling debut during the weekend tapings in Dallas, TX, issued a statement over the injury he suffered in his first match with the promotion. Haas wrestled Josh Alexander in the main event of the Sunday night tapings and suffered a concussion when he slipped, with his head catching Alexander's head and the rope simultaneously. Haas called the incident one of those "freak wrestling accidents you can't explain" and thanked the Impact management and roster for their great care and attention they showed to him. "I can't say enough good things & I truly look forward to working with them again in the near future. I just wanted everyone to know I will be just fine, and contrary to some reports, Charlie Haas is not dead," he wrote. He added that his appearance on the show lit a new fire in him and for the first time in over five years he will be taking bookings in 2022. "There are a ton of crazy & unique matchups happening these days & I want to be a part of it all," Haas said.
Finance Buzz listed Swoggle, James Ellsworth, Tito Santana, Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, Charles Wright, and The Sandman as among the best Cameo values in sports due their low price and popularity index numbers.
Ricky Morton posted on Twitter than The Rock-N-Roll Express Farewell Tour will be starting soon. He tweeted “Rock & Roll Express Farewell tour begins January 22nd, 2022. I want to focus more with Kerry and behind the scenes in the wrestling business. #onelastride".
A post on Facebook said that Bobby Fulton had passed away. Fulton himself commented saying "Who knew? FYI I'm alive and well, still tougher than a $2 steak and meaner than a rattlesnake!"
On Monday, UWE announced that their "Showdown 2022" scheduled for January 15th in Tahlequah was going to be postponed due to the recent COVID-19 surge in Cherokee County and due to UWE Champion Big Smooth, UWE Apex Champion Koko, and other UWE stars and friends and family members also being stricken with COVID. Oklafan wishes all of the UWE Family that are affected with COVID a speedy recovery.
Oklafan extends condolence to the family and friends of Nytronis A'Teo, who passed away on January 10th due to complications from pneumonia and COVID-19. He was 44 years old. A'Teo, whose real name was Shannon Hutchens, debuted in July 2015 for IWR as a member of The Terror Squad. In September, fellow Terror Squad members D Money and Montego Seeka would defeat Guy Atticus in a Handicap Match to become the inaugural IWR Tag Team Champions and IWR management allowed all members (which would come to later include MVP) to be recognized as champions. But A'Teo would not remain a competitor with IWR much longer after that and eventually arrived in MSWA. Victories over competitors such as Giganto, Dominator, and Lockdown established Nytronis as the dominant "big man" of the company and he remained undefeated in MSWA until losing a match to Psycho Mike by countout, which allowed Mike back on to the MSWA roster. A'Teo appeared to have caught the eye of manager C. M. Burnham, who came out to congratulate him after he won a 7-Man Over-The-Top-Rope Challenge, but that alliance never really came to fruition and A'Teo remained a man on his own. He continued to rack up the victories with wins over men like Brawler Morrison, Gemini [2nd], and Dean Lambert, and fellow big men Mr. Barnes and Buster Cherry. A couple of victories over Drake Gallows (1 by pinfall, the other by DQ) moved him even higher into contention for the MSWA Title, but then, he decided to carve his own path and on June 16, 2017, he did what no one else has ever done: he single-handedly defeated MSWA Mid-South Tag Team Champions The Saints of Pro Wrestling (Scott Sanders, Shawn Sanders, & Chaz Sharpe) in a 3-on-1 Handicap Match for the titles, becoming the only person to hold the MSWA Tag Team Titles by themselves. MSWA management refused to allow him to keep the tag team titles by himself, and thus he was stripped of the belts shortly after winning them. A'Teo then had two more matches against Buster Cherry, both of which ended in Double Countouts, before he left the company. Nytronis would next appear in BPW briefly, working as a "gun-for-hire" for The Payroll and defeating Steven Cruze, but then losing to Tommy Dean the next month, allowing Dean to qualify for the Ticket To The Top Match. After that Nytronis began to compete exclusively outside of Oklahoma, winning titles in Texas and Kansas. But he made a surprise return on November 2, 2019, teaming with Gorgeous Garcia to defeat The Saints of Pro Wrestling for the EmpCW Tag Team Titles in part of a huge ploy by Guy Sterling and C. M. Burnham to unify their rosters together and form Ego. Garcia & Nytronis, dubbed The War Party, would hold those belts until March 13, 2020, when they would be defeated by The Sidekicks, Kevin James Sanchez and Gemini [2nd]. That would mark the final appearance of A'Teo in an Oklahoma ring. In total, he competed on 25 Oklahoma cards over a 5 year time. He was proud to have seen his daughter, Akuma A’Teo, make her wrestling debut and according to his Facebook, his son was in training to become a wrestler as well. Perhaps most upsetting is that he and his fiancée were set to get married this coming summer before his untimely death.
