The Scoop

NEWS
Jake Hager is trying to get the October 23rd MMA fight with Fedor Emelianenko in Russia. Odds are that he won’t, but he is pushing for it.
A male fan tried to storm the ring on "AEW Dynamite" last week during the beginning of the Chris Jericho/Maxwell Jacob Friedman segment and was nearly successful in his attempt. The intruder managed to step on the apron before a security guard blocked him as Jericho finished his entrance. MJF, who was already in the ring sitting down, stood up and moved towards the ropes while Jericho also took a swing at the individual and then pushed him down. Ring announcer Justin Roberts also got in on the action and while the intruder was down on the entrance ramp, he pulled him by his legs as security secured the man. The segment then continued without any incidents. You can see cell phone footage from someone at ringside who caught the incident by clicking here.
Jim Cornette, an avid critic of All Elite Wrestling, addressed the guy who tried to storm the ring during the Chris Jericho and Maxwell Jacob Friedman segment. The man, who identifies himself as "Fat Bastard" on Twitter, tweeted to Cornette asking him if he loved his AEW debut this week. But Cornette was not impressed and tore the guy a new one. "Got news for you dipsh!t, the ring is sacred ground for US, and even if you and a lot of others THINK you can kick the sh!t out of the Young Bucks, I would have turned you into a tennis racket popsicle, & you're lucky someone there didn't gut you like a fish," Cornette wrote back, adding the news that he blocked him as well. Chris Jericho also addressed "Fat Bastard" on Twitter before Cornette even replied. "Do you really think @TheJimCornette would condone this you f*ckin loser? Jimmy would’ve shoved a tennis racket up your ass and smashed your car windows," he wrote. Cornette has a habit of bashing AEW on his podcast and is not a fan of Tony Khan or what he presents on television every week.
UFC fighters Jorge Masvidal and Amanda Nunes appeared at the "AEW Dynamite - Road Rager" event last week in Miami, FL along with Dan Lambert, the founder of the world-renowned American Top Team MMA gym. The three were about to get interviewed by Tony Schiavone before Lambert hijacked the microphone and stepped in the ring to cut a heel promo, running down AEW, its stars, and wrestling in general. Lambert said that if he wants to see good wrestling, he has to put in a VHS tape of Championship Wrestling from Florida and not see this, saying that AEW sucks. As Lambert ranted on and on, Lance Archer then stormed down the ring with Jake "The Snake" Roberts and knocked him out before delivering the Blackout.
Ethan Page was a guest on this week’s episode of "Oral Sessions" with Renee Paquette with special guest host Danhausen and talked about keeping his circle of friends small, and why longtime foe Darby Allin isn’t in that circle. “I’m kinda always a piece of shit with people that I dislike,” Page explained. “And Darby Allin is one of those people that I strongly dislike. He also only paints half of his face. I only like to be friends with people that paint all of their face.” Danhausen said he only puts a little red under the eyes, then they spoke about some other potential legends that Page would like to work with. “If Sting keeps his nose in my business, I have no problem whipping his ass for the rest of his career, which I’m sure won’t be that long,” he said. “More legends? There are so many backstage at AEW, I feel like just walking around and Ego’s Edging Arn Anderson into catering, that would be entertaining. Jake ‘The Snake’ [Roberts] gave me a clothesline on my debut, I did not like that, so I owe him a bit of a receipt. I would like that.” Page then asked Danhausen which tag team he’d like to see as opponents for himself and Scorpio Sky, and Danhausen said Trent is a good boy. Page then said he’d love a shot at Orange Cassidy for the simple reason that he’s a man of fashion and wants to wear a Canadian tuxedo without any backlash. “Oh, you like the Best Friends? See, I would love to beat up Orange Cassidy. It pisses me off that he’s kinda cornered the market on the denim, especially since he’s not Canadian and he wears a Canadian tuxedo on a regular basis. I want to wear more of them,” Page noted, “but I feel like if I do all the little nerds online are going to be like, ‘Oh, you can’t wear that! That’s Orange Cassidy’s outfit!’ And it pisses me off because I’m a man of fashion.” Danhausen said he once wore an all-black Canadian tuxedo to be an ‘evil’ Orange Cassidy, and Page said he is tired of playing politics to wear what he wants. “I’m too new in the company. Don’t worry, by the end of my contract, I’m sure I’ll be able to piss off whoever the hell I want,” he stated. “My goal is to be able to dress like Chuck Norris without anyone mentioning Orange Cassidy.”
During an appearance on "Busted Open Radio", Jim Ross discussed what he told Malakai Black after Black’s AEW debut: “As many fans know that listen to my podcast -- which drops every Thursday -- I didn’t want to know. I react better if I don’t know the lay of the land, as much. I don’t look at this as a theatrical performance. I look at this as a ballgame, and I don’t need to know who wins the game until the game is over. I was pleasantly surprised that Malakai Black joined us. I saw him after the show, he shook my hand. I never met him before, he said he was glad to meet me and likewise for me. I said, ‘We're counting on you. We're counting on you to play in a big way. Not just come in and be one of the boys, but come in and be one of the stars.’ I think he hadn’t heard that in a while. And I think that meant a lot to him. I wasn’t trying to blow smoke, I was just trying to say, you’re a highly regarded piece of talent that we value and we’re happy you’re here. So, now we’re looking for great things. You set the bar high with your debut, now let’s see where we can take you.”
During a recent episode of "Grilling JR", Jim Ross spoke on Jim Herd deciding to fire Ric Flair from WCW in 1991 and the fallout after. Here’s what he had to say: “Here’s the deal and how I looked at it as the head of talent. I’ve gotta know how much of my budget I’ve got to cut. You’re looking to save bottom-line costs and the magic number from the bean counters there at Turner is blank. Well, I can figure out a way to get you you’re number and never touch Flair’s money. It’s called management and strategy. So, I’m gonna forsake this veteran that’s basically the face of our brand and has more identity than anybody on the roster over mathematics. It became more than mathematics, it became personal with those guys. Herd dug his heels in and was making a statement. ‘I’ll show these son of a bitches who’s in charge.’ Then there’s Flair who says, ‘I’m Ric Flair. I ain’t gotta put up with this shit.’ I’m just disappointed that communication didn’t happen. We had nobody in the talent relations role at that time in Turner other than Mr. Herd. He hired and fired and negotiated. It was not a good scenario whatsoever. It was obvious where he’d head. He knew Vince would use him well. That’s all Vince has to say to you. Guys that understand the business know that means you’re gonna be working in the main events or someone in the top third of the card where you get a chance to make more money. Vince put Ric in a top position from day one. Everybody looked at Ric on a different level than everybody else. Out of respect, he didn’t get a lot of shit in that regard. I’ll tell you, that’s not the way you do business. Naitch knows that. But again, it got so personal and lingered so long that we were losing options. We’re losing the desire to negotiate and solve the issue. At a certain point around that time, I think Ric had given up, ‘I’m leaving, I’m tired of this shit. I’m gonna go to WWF and work for Vince.’ A lot of people didn’t understand. ‘Just drop the belt. What’s it gonna hurt?’ Here’s what’s frustrating, and I’m not blaming Ric because could have or could not have done it. I’m just saying this whole scenario over the title, every day I went to the office it was something different. It got to be like this one-upmanship.”
Ric Flair, Edge, and Rhea Ripley will be guests on next Wednesday’s edition of "The Bump".
Current WWE RAW Tag Team Champions A. J. Styles & Omos are nominated for Tag Team of the Half-Year in the WWE’s “Bumpy People’s Choice” Awards, which will air on August 4th on Peacock and the WWE Network.
Full matches added to the WWE YouTube page include A. J. Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Jinder Mahal vs. Roman Reigns from "Money in the Bank 2018" and Mahal vs. Randy Orion from "Money in the Bank 2017".
Terry Funk's Twitter page posted a health update on him: "Yes, Mr. Funk is currently receiving residential care for his multiple health issues, which do affect his mind as well as the rest of his body. As you can imagine, some days are better than others. He & his family appreciate all of your kind words! FOREVER!"
Tommy Dreamer posted an update on Terry Funk’s health after speaking with him last week: “Everyone needs to relax. I just got off phone w/ Terry Funk. He is NOT in bad health. He loves everyone talking about him. Direct quote from Funker. I'm currently sitting in an assisted living place w/my thumb up my ass Whistling Dixie but I don't remember the words #Forever #ECW”. Dreamer also spoke about his conversation with Funk on "Busted Open Radio" which you can hear by clicking here.
