Bret Hart Names The Three Men Responsible For The Montreal Screwjob (And None Of Them Are Shawn Michaels)

Bret Hart believes three men were responsible for piecing together The Montreal Screwjob, but Shawn Michaels was just along for the ride.
Bret Hart believes three men were responsible for thinking up The Montreal Screwjob, and while one of them is obvious, the other two might surprise you.
There are a handful of nights in wrestling history that will be remembered forever. Hulk Hogan's heel turn, CM Punk leaving WWE with the title, Brock Lesnar breaking The Undertaker's streak. However, all of those may well be beaten in terms of impact by The Montreal Screwjob. The night Bret Hart lost the WWE Title to his own iconic submission maneuver, even though he never actually tapped out.
As interesting a topic as that night is, it is one that has been talked to death more than anything else in the wrestling business. Which is why it was surprising when The Hitman talked about it yet again during Confessions of The Hitman. Even more surprising is something Hart explained that we have never heard from him before. The men he believes to be directly responsible for the Screwjob.
Vince McMahon is at the top of that shortlist, that's no surprise. What is shocking is Shawn Michaels doesn't appear on it at all. "I'd say I gave Shawn the benefit of the doubt...[he] was more of a willing participant," Hart explained. His good buddy Triple H, however, the Hall of Famer thinks he had a hand in coming up with the idea. "Triple H, from what I gathered, I think he was pushing that thing more than Shawn."
A surprising accusation to make considering Triple H's standing in the company at the time. While The Game would have been ascending through the company towards the end of 1997, he was far from McMahon's right-hand man at that time. He was good friends with Michaels but hadn't even started dating Stephanie McMahon by that point
Slot number three is occupied by Gerald Brisco. The veteran was released by WWE this year after more than 30 years at the company. Brisco worked closely with McMahon during the Attitude Era, so it would make sense that he played a part in piecing together how to get the belt off Bret before The Hitman went to WCW. As for the whole truth about The Montreal Screwjob and how exactly it came to be, that might be something we never know entirely.
