Montcalm to Fullfill Pro Wrestling Fantasy

Montcalm to Fullfill Pro Wrestling Fantasy

Matty Montcalm sounded as if someone needed to pinch him.

"You watch somebody on the TV like you want to make it to where they are," he said. "Then about 15 years later, you're his tag team partner. It's something else."

Montcalm started beaming like this two months ago, when Tim Lyle, commissioner of Streator-based Powerhouse Wrestling, gave him a call.

The circuit was coming to Lincoln College for a show soon (7 p.m. this coming Saturday, actually). How would the native son like to pair with former WWE star The Honky Tonk Man?

Montcalm pounced. Had to. He still remembered seeing the Tonk's antics as a youngster, namely the time he nailed Macho Man Randy Savage with a guitar.

"I can't turn down something like that," Montcalm said.

With his decision, the seemingly impossible has happened again. Accepting this "dream" opportunity has led to a growth in the 21-year-old's local celebrity.

It happens at school (Lincoln College), work (Sorrento's) and play (training at the Lincoln Park District).

People want to know: Is it true what everyone's saying about him and Honky Tonk?

"They can't believe it, either," Montcalm said.

About 15 friends and family came to see Montcalm at Powerhouse's most recent Lincoln show in February. He figures that number will grow significantly this time around.

With all this, why not carry that optimism further?

"Saturday could really go a long way in helping me advance my career," Montcalm said. "Wrestling alongside a guy like The Honky Tonk Man is great experience. Great exposure."
