Karrion Kross wins NXT title, suffers shoulder injury

Karrion Kross wins NXT title, suffers shoulder injury

Posted: Aug 23rd 2020 By: Joseph Currier

NXT's 30th TakeOver special ended with the crowning of a new NXT Champion.

In the main event of TakeOver XXX tonight, Karrion Kross defeated Keith Lee to win the NXT Championship. Kross got the win by hitting a Doomsday Saito suplex from the second rope.

Kross locked Lee in the Kross Jacket during the match, but Lee was able to get to the ropes and break the hold. There was then a near fall when Lee was able to hit a Spirit Bomb on Kross. Lee put Kross in position for a moonsault and went to climb the ropes, but Kross fought with Lee and hit the Doomsday Saito to become NXT Champion.

On his post-TakeOver conference call, Triple H said it looks like Kross separated his shoulder somewhere during tonight's match. Kross wanted to continue the match, and NXT's medical team was watching Kross, thought it was a separated shoulder, and were comfortable with him continuing. Triple H said Kross will be getting an MRI and they hope it isn't anything too bad and is something they can work around or work through.

Lee had been NXT Champion since defeating Adam Cole in a winner-take-all title vs. title match at Great American Bash night two last month. Lee vacated the North American Championship following that match. At TakeOver tonight, Damian Priest won a five-man ladder match to become the new North American Champion.

This was Kross' second TakeOver match. He made his TakeOver debut by defeating Tommaso Ciampa at TakeOver: In Your House this June. Ciampa is returning to NXT television this coming Wednesday.

WWE.com posted an injury update on Karrion Kross and announced that he'll be getting an MRI on Monday:

Karrion Kross captured the NXT Championship from Keith Lee at TakeOver XXX, and he did it after sustaining a shoulder injury, WWE.com has learned.

WWE medical staff confirmed that Kross sustained a separated acromioclavicular joint during his battle with The Limitless One. Despite the injury, a determined Kross took down the champion, showing incredible toughness by lifting Lee up for a devastating Doomsday Saito off the middle rope to claim the NXT Championship.

Kross will have an MRI on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury.
