Undertaker-AJ Styles boneyard match headlines WrestleMania night one

Undertaker-AJ Styles boneyard match headlines WrestleMania night one

Posted: Apr 5th 2020 By: Joseph Currier

Night one of the most unique WrestleMania ever was headlined by a main event unlike any other in the show's history.

The Undertaker and AJ Styles' boneyard match main evented WrestleMania 36 night one on Saturday. The match was filmed at a graveyard setting and was far more of a cinematic production than a traditional wrestling match.

Undertaker's theme played and a hearse arrived at the start of the match, but druids opened the coffin and it was revealed to be Styles playing mind games. Undertaker then arrived to the graveyard on a motorcycle and using Metallica's "Now That We're Dead" as his entrance music.

Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson were also involved in the match, but Undertaker got the win by burying Styles. After being chokeslammed off a roof, Styles pleaded with Undertaker not to bury him. Undertaker said Styles gave him a hell of a fight and acted like he wasn't going to bury him, but he then turned around and gave Styles a big boot into the grave.

Undertaker got into the tractor near the grave and poured dirt on Styles. A headstone with Styles' name on it was unveiled and Styles' hand was shown sticking out of the grave. Undertaker then rode off in his motorcycle as the show went off the air.

Stephanie McMahon sent out a tweet congratulating everyone after the match: "Congratulations to everyone involved in #WrestleMania night 1, especially @undertaker, @AJStylesOrg, @LukeGallowsWWE @KarlAndersonWWE, @TripleH @Metallica & the entire crew involved in the #boneyard match, it was incredible! #innovation #reimagine #passion I can’t wait 4 part 2!"

John Cena and Bray Wyatt's Firefly Fun House match at WrestleMania 36 night two on Sunday figures to be presented in a similar fashion to the boneyard match. When WrestleMania was moved to the Performance Center due to the coronavirus pandemic, WWE noted that other closed set locations would be used as well.
