Possible Spoiler For Goldberg-Bray Wyatt Match & WrestleMania Plans

Possible Spoiler For Goldberg-Bray Wyatt Match & WrestleMania Plans

Posted: Feb 10th 2020 By: Alex Hoegler - Sportster.com

On this week's episode of SmackDown Live, Bray Wyatt accepted Goldberg's challenge for a Universal Championship match on the Feb. 27 Super Showdown event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Given his major push and the other marquee names he's defeated, it's easy to assume that Wyatt will outlast the WWE Hall of Famer and retain his Universal Championship while staying undefeated as "The Fiend" heading into WrestleMania 36.

The belief is that Wyatt will end up facing Roman Reigns on the Grandest Stage of Them All. However, those may not longer be the plans, and it sounds like we could be in line for a bit of an upset at Super ShowDown.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t Ringside News) explained that Goldberg could emerge as the winner over Wyatt -- pointing out that WWE needs to "protect him," otherwise the wrestling legend is not gonna mean anything."

Meltzer also suggested that a Goldberg-Reigns WrestleMania match "will have more fan interest" compared to a showdown between the Big Dog and The Fiend. Meltzer did add that that Reigns vs. Wyatt was the planned match, but Vince McMahon can always change that.

Goldberg has only wrestled two matches since his WrestleMania 33 loss to Brock Lesnar -- at Super ShowDown 2019 vs. Undertaker and at SummerSlam two months later against Dolph Ziggler.

But the Hall of Famer and former Universal Champion remains a giant money draw and fan favorite. It wouldn't be the least bit surprising if Vince made a pure business decision and placed Goldberg in a main event match at WrestleMania, even at the cost of losing The Fiend's momentum and undefeated streak.

This Would Be A Risky Booking Decision

WWE has come under criticism for often placing the Universal and WWE Championships on a part-timer. Goldberg dethroned Kevin Owens as Universal Champion in 2017, and the latter hasn't been atop the main event scene ever since. Having a returning legend defeat Wyatt and thus end his spectacular run would possibly work in the short term, but it probably isn't the best plan in the long-term. WWE should think about this carefully before proceeding with it.
