Sting reveals who he would face in one last match
Posted: Mar 22nd 2019 By: Ryan Sidle
When Sting finally turned up in WWE it was to the shock and delight of most people. The former WCW man was one of the few men of his generation to never step foot inside the ring of the ‘opposition.’
Even before the famous ‘Monday Night Wars’ Sting was synonymous with WCW and he never once looked like jumping ship to join WWE, as many of his friends and colleagues had done.
When Vince McMahon’s company bought WCW in 2001 the Invasion angle was without many of the company’s top names and Sting was one man who was missing.
It was expected that he would unfortunately never join wrestling’s biggest company but he eventually turned up in 2014 in a moment that gave those watching genuine goosebumps.
‘Stingers’ time in the ring for WWE was brief but still included a Wrestlemania feud with Triple H, that also saw members of DX and the nWo come back to the ring, and a WWE title match with Seth Rollins, after which the legend retired.
The 60-year-old hasn’t wrestled since September 2015 and speaking to Wrestling Travel recently he revealed that he’d only come back for a match with The Undertaker, saying:
“I mean, everyone knows who it would be. Taker, he’s the only guy I’d come out of retirement for now. No one else. We could just never get it together to make it happen. When I started talking to WWE he was booked with Brock and then I did the deal with Triple H and he had another feud going on at the time, so it was just one of those things we couldn’t make happen.
“But I don’t regret it not happening either, I mean I got to face Triple H at my first WrestleMania and then wrestle Seth for the world title, so I didn’t do too badly out of that deal. But yeah, now, the only person I’m getting back in the ring for is Taker.”
There had previously been rumours that Sting was going to sign with WWE and face The Undertaker at Wrestlemania but these mainly came from videos hinting at ‘Takers’ opponent, who ended up being Triple H.
Instead, the WCW’s franchise player ended his career at Night of Champions against Rollins. In the match the face painted superstar took a ‘buckle bomb’ and ended up injuring himself, leading to his retirement.
Sting revealed that the injury didn’t stop any big plans adding, “There weren’t really any set plans for me after the Seth match if I hadn’t got injured. The idea was just for me to have one off matches here and there, but I didn’t have any planned opponents or anything like that, we were just going to see what was best for business at the time.”
‘The Icon’ rightly took his place in WWE’s Hall of Fame in 2016 and mentioned on an episode of the company’s ‘Legends’ show that a match with Undertaker remained his ‘unfinished business.’
It seems unlikely that Sting and the Undertaker will ever meet inside the ring at this point but anyone who loves wrestling will still hold a little hope that it could.
Vigilante, icon, franchise, just utter legend.
