The Scoop

NEWS
Matt Sydal's contract with Impact Wrestling ended January 1st. He should be ready in a couple of months from a minor knee surgery he got last week.

On this week’s episode of his podcast, Jerry Lawler said Vince McMahon called him during the Royal Rumble pre-show and told him to move his crown from one side to the other.

Edge and Beth Phoenix did a Q&A on this week’s episode of the Edge & Christian podcast.

Ric Flair will be turning 70 years old on February 25th and that day happens to be a Monday…so what do you do? Party on television, of course! Wooooo! WWE announced that there will be a big birthday party for the Nature Boy on the February 25 episode of Monday Night Raw which will be live from Atlanta. And that’s even better because the two-time Hall of Famer lives in the area so he can party hard and not need to drive! Hah! WWE noted that Flair’s parties are never “modest” and hinted that some WWE Legends will be in the house as well to celebrate with Flair. The last party WWE threw for Flair was for his retirement the day after WrestleMania 24, reuniting the Four Horsemen in a long segment that had other WWE Superstars as well.

Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler and Shane Helms have been added to Starrcast II.

Ten new individuals were announced as part of the All Elite Wrestling roster last week in Las Vegas during the "Double or Nothing" ticket announcement party at the MGM Grand Hotel. These 10 additions are Sonny Kiss, Sammy Guevara, Chuck Taylor, Trent Beretta, Rey Fenix, Pentagon, Jr., Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki, Kylie Rae, and Nyla Rose. As noted earlier, Kenny Omega also joined the company full time and will be serving in the role of Executive Vice President as well. With the promotion gearing up for their first show in May, you can expect more announcements of talent joining over the next few weeks. A deeper roster is certainly required for a weekly television show. No mention of any television deals was done yesterday.

Scott Hall, Lita, Magnum T. A., Tommy Dreamer, Ricky Steamboat, Sean Waltman (X-Pac), Konnan, Jerry Lynn, David Arquette, Colt Cabana, Joey Ryan, and Kevin Nash have been added to the "Double or Nothing" weekend Starrcast convention.

The latest Ten Pounds of Gold has Billy Corgan doing media ahead of the Crockett Cup, as well as an interview with Jim Cornette. You can see the video by clicking here.

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler appeared on last week’s "Talk is Jericho", which was recorded during last year’s Jericho cruise. You can lissten to the podcast by clicking here.

The Langston University Marching Band, with Seth Angel as a member, performed during halftime of the Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder basketball game at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City last Thursday night.

Oklafan extends condolences to Claire Watson on the passing of her aunt Pam on February 5th.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Les Thornton, who passed away February 1st at the age of 84. At the time of this writing, no cause of death is known. Thornton came from the United Kingdom and was widely recognized as one of the greatest Junior Heavyweights to compete in the sport. He debuted in 1957, but did not come to the United States until 1970. While he was never involved in any high-profile feuds or angles (due to what he perceived as a refusal for American promoters to push English workers), he still had the opportunity to work with most of the top American names in the 1970s and early 1980s and work in most of the territories around the United States. Thornton's greatest accomplishment includes 6 reigns as the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion as well as being the only person to hold the NWA and WWF World Junior Heavyweight Title at the same time (though the WWF version was more of a vanity title for him since he was one of the wrestlers who sold out when Vince McMahon bought Georgia Championship Wrestling in 1984 and he was NWA Junior Champion at that time). Thornton would spend the end of his wrestling career in the WWF, mostly as enhancement talent, before relocating to Canada and entering retirement. Thornton has 6 documented Oklahoma appearances. He first appeared against Bob Burns on a TSW event in Tulsa on October 1, 1979 which he won. He then returned on February 1st, 1980 and lost to the Spoiler in Oklahoma City. On February 11th, he lost to Ron Starr in the finals for the vacant NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title in Tulsa. March 3rd saw another loss to Starr in Tulsa, but on March 7th, he teamed with Brian Blair and defeated Starr and Steve Lawler. Thornton would also spend time under a mask as Checkmate and sometime in October of 1982, he defeated Bill Irwin for the WCCW Television Title, but would lose it the same month to Frank Dusek.
