How Can UWE Keep Fighting Dustin McGowan?

How Can UWE Keep Fighting Dustin McGowan?

Posted: Jul 25th 2018 By: Michael Hunt

There is nothing worse that seeing someone good become someone bad. Especially when that bad goes overboard and becomes fully corrupt.

If you only know Dustin McGowan from WFC, you know him as the spokesman for Before the Fight and After the Cause. The subject of belittlement from individuals like Coach Doggins and the Villains. The man who tells everyone to “keep fighting”.

That Dustin McGowan is good. And like many people in the professional wrestling industry, there is another side to him. A side that lots of people became famililar with back in the days of MERC and SRPW, when he guided the Ring Intruders to the tag team titles in that federation. That Dustin McGowan is alive and well and making UWE a living hell for many of the people who compete there.

Approximately one year ago, the bad Dustin McGowan emerged, bearing a strong hatred towards Mr. Nasty. He would go on to become the C.O.O of UWE drive Mr. Nasty out of the federation. And while many fans were unhappy at that end result, none expected the depths that McGowan would sink to over the past couple of months.

Like many people in positions of power, McGowan found himself physically threatened by some of the wrestlers that he was not treating fairly. Consequently, last month, McGowan announced the formation of a group he called The Proclamation. That group consisted of WFC Hometown Heroes & UWE Champion Alex Royal (who had won the UWE Title because McGowan had forced Anarchy [2nd] to defend it immediately after winning it from Skyler Fayden), his body guard Reed and the collective known as The Villains: WFC Champion Tim Rockwell, current BPW Oklahoma Tag Team Champion Paul Puertorico, WFC Tag Team Champion Steven Cruze and Dexter Hardaway. This assortment, like so many before it, used numerical superiority and thug tactics, combined with McGowan’s position of authourity, to enact a reign of terror on UWE beginning in June and continuing into July.

But McGowan really upped the ante at the beginning of the show this past Saturday. As ring announcer C. M. Burnham was making his introductory statements to the fans, Mr. Nasty’s music played and it looked like “The Creole Soul” was finally making his way back to UWE. Instead, McGowan emerged from the entrance and announced to the crowd that he had acquired the rights to the name “Mr. Nasty”, which he was hereby applying to himself and that the previous individual of that name was never going to be seen in UWE again. With that said, McGowan then brought out Alex Royal who had a title defence against Drake Gallows. Gallows, who had never held a title in UWE before, was prepared and looked forward to this match, but after about 3 minutes, Royal found himself outside the ring and did not re-enter before the count of 10. As Burnham was announcing Gallows the winner, McGowan interrupted and said that he had forgotten to mention that this match was a No Countout match. That freed both men to go outside the ring and compete around the crowd, which still put Gallows in an advantageous position. Both men battled to the upstairs area of the Markoma Gym and at one point, it appeared that Royal might suplex Gallows off the balcony. But they eventually returned to the confines of the ring where once again, Gallows found himself on the verge of winning. At that point, the other members of the Proclamation hit the ring and the referee called for the bell. And again, McGowan interceded, announcing that the match was a No DQ match. After what must have felt like forever to Gallows, his best friend, BCW Buzzsaw Champion Sam Stackhouse and wife Chelsea arrived, swinging a kendo stick and cleaning the area. Gallows, now with backup and able to catch his breath, caught Royal in the Emo Killer and pinned him to become the new UWE Champion!

But again, McGowan, knowing that no one could stop him, demanded that Gallows be a “fighting champion” and invoked Royal’s rematch clause. While the Villains took out Stackhouse, Royal put down Gallows and regained the title. The fans were irate as they witnessed a massive abuse of power. And that was just the opening match. Sadly, there was more to come.

Later in the show, McGowan once again came out and called out UWE United States Champion Dusty Gold. He talked about Dusty’s recent past, his movement up the ladder in UWE, his amazing championship match with Wesley Crane. He then offered Gold a spot in the Proclamation. Gold considered it, noting that it would give additional championship gold to the group, but ultimately decided not to as he had gotten to his spot on his own and he intended to stay there on his own. This infuriated McGowan, who brought out Steven Cruze, with the recently returned Taylor K by his side, to challenge for that title. As always, Cruze presented a strong challenge for the championship, but ultimately fell to the champion. And once again, McGowan asserted his unchallenged authourity and forced another title defence on Gold in the form of Reed. That match did not last long as Anarchy ran out and attacked Reed, causing Reed to win by DQ, but not capturing the title.

McGowan received some comeuppance during the Sooner Stampede as he was the last man eliminated by Fuel, who won the event. But the question still remains: How do you stop a man in McGowan’s position? Obviously, this is a perfect example of absolute power corrupting absolutely and if UWE has anything akin to a Board of Directors, they probably should step in soon. If not, McGowan and his associates will continue down the path that he has forged for them.

And the only way to stop him will be for people like Fuel, Gold, Gallows and others of their kind to keep fighting.
