The Ultimate Underdog

The Ultimate Underdog

Posted: Aug 21st 2007 By: CMBurnham

Back in the 1960s, there was a cartoon character known as "Underdog". He was sort of like a canine version of Superman. But he was meant to represent the people who aren't expected to succeed, but keep on fighting nonetheless.

ComPro has their own version of Underdog and his name is Rico Suave.

You can look at his win-loss record. It's not very good. Truth be told, he hasn't won a match since last Fall. But that doesn't stop Rico from going out each week and making the best effort he can.

Somewhere along the line, Rico seems to have picked up a reputation for tag team wrestling. Perhaps it was his TPW tag team with Poo Bear (now Cold Blooded Chris) that brought this to his fellow wrestlers' attention. Poo Bear & Rico were certainly top challengers to Sexy Bologna at the end of TPW's existance, but before they could defeat Anthony Jackson & Sudden Impact 1, TPW shut down. Several months later, Poo Bear & Rico had a massive falling out and, while Rico came out on top in that feud, his success in the ring hasn't been as forthcoming.

He's teamed with Pork Chop & Dexter Hardaway to challenge ComPro Tag Team Champions Texas, Inc. for their belts. And he came up short each time. But oddly enough, fate would grant him another opportunity to win a tag team title this past weekend, even though he almost missed the call.

FCW Tag Team Champions the Compound Varsity (Romero Contreras & ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Justin Lee) entered the ring in the main event of the FCW show at Will Rogers Methodist Church Saturday, answering the challenge of Anthony Jackson. Jackson stood alone. He had no partner. The days of Sexy Bologna were over, as Sudden Impact 2 had returned to active competition and he and his brother are making a serious challenge to Texas, Inc. for their ComPro tag team belts. In a wonderful show of fairness, Romero called out the entire FCW locker room to allow Jackson to pick a partner from. And Jackson went through every member from ComPro champion AWOL to FCW Champion the Canadian Red Devil to Michael York and El Super Colibri, dismissing them all as unworthy or unfit. With that done, Romero saw no choice but to face Jackson in a handicap match, an idea that didn't sit too well with "All Action". And then, running from the locker room with toilet paper stringing from his tights came Rico. While it's fair to say that Rico would not have been Jackson's first choice, he saw it as another opportunity to make someone a superstar (much like he had done 3 years ago with Sudden Impact 1) and accepted Rico in the challenge for the FCW Tag Team titles.

The match did not go Jackson's way. He knew he was outclassed. And while he may have accidentally struck gold with Sexy Bologna in 2004, Rico was no Sudden Impact 1. Then end came after some impressive double-team maneouvres and the Varsity walked out with their belts (and their jackets) intact.

That night, Rico was back in singles action, facing El Super Colibri. The Shadow of Death came to ringside to observe this match, it's doubtful that he was anymore impressed with Rico's performance this week than he was last week against the Canadian Red Devil. The end of the match saw Rico staring at the lights again.

But he won't quit. He'll keep coming back for more. And one day, he's going to score that massive upset so that people will stop thinking "underdog" and start thinking "star".
