The Scoop

NEWS
After SmackDown's battle royal main event ended in controversy with WWE claiming that A. J. Styles and Luke Harper's feet touched the floor at the same time, it was announced that Styles would be facing Harper next week. The match will supposedly determine a new number one contender for the WWE Championship as part of the storyline where Randy Orton refuses to face Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania.
A. J. Styles was off the weekend SmackDown house shows. He was advertised but there might have been an ad mixup as he had the time off and will be back to wrestle Luke Harper on Tuesday night on "WWE SmackDown Live" in St. Paul, MN.
Mick Foley tweeted about the finish of the battle royal: "Come on, if we did that on #Raw, we would be eviscerated for it by #Smackdown fans."
Goldberg tweeted a congratulations to Asuka on having 149 wins in a row.
On his latest podcast, Bruce Prichard insists Vince McMahon isn’t out of touch. He said “John Layfield and I had this discussion not long ago, talking about how people say that [McMahon]’s out of touch and that he [has] lost it, he’s this, that, and the other thing. I remember those same comments about him in 1984, that he doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’s killing the [professional] wrestling business, he doesn’t have a clue, he [has] lost his mind. I don’t know how many times I heard it in the 90s, early 2000s, when I was there. Look, I’ll put his track record up against anybody. But was always intense and it was insane at times, but it was never boring.”
On his latest podcast, Jim Ross praised Kevin Owens. He said "On Raw on Monday Night, I believe that Kevin Owens stole the show in the first moment. It was a really good promo. I loved the way it was shot, and how his face filled the camera, filled the screen, I guess I should say. Kevin Owens delivered the goods on Monday Night with that promo and that’s not an easy thing to do. He went out there and he remembered his directions, and more importantly delivered the verbiage to where I remember most of it, which is really good. I tip my hat to Kevin Owens to that. I tip my hat to Big Show for being unselfish, and for making Braun Strowman look bigger than life, so my hats off to Big Show. I understand getting Roman Reigns and Strowman back together because they are going to work together at the next pay-per-view, I just don’t understand the run-in thing. Does it make Reigns look like a hero for running into attack Strowman, or does it not? I don’t know, I’m conflicted obviously. I didn’t get a good feel for it and I like Roman Reigns, but I didn’t like the playcalling of it. I may have just missed the message, I don’t know. Hats off to Kevin Owens for the promo, Big Show for taking care of Strowman, which by the way, the WWE has done a great job in building him up. I can only hope that when Strowman and Reigns wrestle at the pay per view, Strowman wins. Good job WWE with Strowman, just keep it going.”
Jeff Jarrett has emerged as the head of the booking committee of "Impact Wrestling". PWInsider reports that in addition to Jarrett, TNA’s current booking committee consists of Scott D’Amore, Dutch Mantell, and Abyss. Rockstar Spud and long time announcer Jeremy Borash are also assisting the booking committee. Apparently, Matt Conway, who had been on the booking team for years, is no longer with the company. TNA may also be hiring a writer who would be responsible for formatting the shows and turning them into scripts for production.
Ed Nordholm, the President of TNA, went with Jeff Jarrett to Tijuana for The Crash show last week. It sounds like Dorian Roldan's strategy of threatening to sue them didn't lead to them working with Asistencia Asesoría y Administración.
Dutch Mantell posted on Twitter "NEWS: Finally, I can OFFICIALLY announce that I have signed with @IMPACTWRESTLING in a creative/advisory capacity. Changes underway."
Ric Flair celebrated his 68th birthday in Los Angeles doing a signing at Frank & Son's Collectibles. There were hundreds of people singing Happy Birthday to him when he arrived.
A bunch of new names have been announced for Wrestlecon in Orlando over WrestleMania weekend. Among the names are Lex Luger, Tony Schiavone, Bobby Lashley, Stan Hansen, Veda Scott, Kikutaro, Torito, Ivelisse, Molly Holly, Brian Hebner, Sonjay Dutt, Sid Vicious, Iron Sheik and Armando Estrada.
Greg Oliver of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a book about Jeff Bowdren's new book called Breaking Kayfabe: Dinner with the Legends of Wrestling which chronicles his years as a fan and sriking up frienships with wrestlers such as Barry Windham, Dutch Mantell, Jerry Brisco, J. J. Dillon, Jerry Lawler, Larry Zbyszko, Masked Superstar, Paul Jones, Paul Orndorff, Ric Flair, Ron Bass, Stan Hansen, Ted DiBiase, Magnum T. A., Terry Funk, and Terry Taylor, among others. The book also includes extra interviews conducted with Karl Gotch, The Great Malenko, and Tom Nash. You can read the story by clicking here.
Oklafan congratulates Brendan Orullian on his recent marriage on Saturday.
Oklafan congratulates Mike Two on the birth of his daughter Kamden on February 23rd. He and his wife named The Canadian Red Devil as their daughter's godfather.
Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Bob Sweetan, who passed away February 10th after battling several health issues. He was 76 years old. Sweetan, who was born Robert Beier, but at some point legally changed his name to Robert Carson, was born in Goodsoil, Saskatchewan, Canada, briefly played football with the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. But a chance meeting with a pro wrestler who was also working as a door-to-door pot and pan salesman led him to being trained for pro wrestling by Stu Hart. From there, Sweetan would work for many different territories, mostly in the central United States and Canada. His career would last from 1965 until 1987. But while he was appreciated by the fan, Sweetan was a loner in the locker room and rubbed several people the wrong way. Ultimately, years of drug abuse took its toll on him and then, in 1990, he was convicted of molesting his 15-year old daughter. This forced him to register as a sex offender, which he did annually until 2001. At that point, he was deported back to Canada where he spent the rest of this life. Sweetan was a main fixture in Oklahoma in the 1970s and 80s, competing in 75 documented matches. His earliest was a victory over Red McKim at a TSW event in Oklahoma City and his last was November 10, 1985 where he teamed with MSW Mid-South Tag Team Champions Al Perez & Wendell Cooley and lost to Buzz Sawyer, Eddie Gilbert, & Steve Williams at a MSW event in Oklahoma City. During his time here, Sweetan would be 1/2 of the inaugural MSW Mid-South Tag Team Champions with Mike George, which they won on September 28, 1979 and would hold until November 12, 1979 when they lost it to Buck Robley & Bill Watts. He would go on to feud with Mike George, defeating him for the TSW Title on March 30, 1981 and losing it back to him on May 1, 1981. He also held the TSW Tag Team Titles on 2 occassions. He and Karl Kox defeated Dick Murdoch and Ted DiBiase on May 11, 1976, but he and Kox could not get along and eventually Kox chose Ken Patera as a partner and defeated Sweetan and Randy Tyler for control of the titles on October 19, 1976. Sweetan would later team with Tony Rocco and defeat Skandar Akbar and Choi Sun for the titles on March 16, 1977, but this title reign would only last a couple of weeks and then they lost the title to The Medics on March 27, 1977. Perhaps most fittingly, Sweetan had multiple reigns as TSW Brass Knucks champion. This was the first title he held, defeating The Stomper for it in June of 1972, then losing it to Rip Tyler on May 6, 1974. This would make him the longest reining Brass Knucks champion in the company's history. He would reclaim the title in July of 1979 from Bill Watts, but would barely hold it for a month before losing it to Angelo Mosca on August 1, 1979.
