JR's Blog: JR's RAW Feedback, Chavo & Bull on new, Ross Report Tonight, Leave Punk Alone, Stupid, Crowd Chants
Posted: Sep 14th 2016 By: Jim Ross
We are another day closer to this Saturday night's CFB showdown here in Norman, Oklahoma between OU Sooners and the Ohio State Buckeyes who are on of the most powerful football teams in the game. This game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports at 6:30 pm CT. My black hat and I will be on the Sooners sideline for this epic and historical game.
Tonight (Monday) at 9 pm ET on www.podcastone.com and @iTunes a new, The Ross Report podcast drops with my special guests, Lucha Underground's Chavo Guerrero and former @WWE NXT star @RealBullJames plus I will address the @CMPunk UFC drama and my review of the WWE Backlash show from Sunday night. Please consider subscribing for FREE at iTunes and know that it helps us significantly and that you get every show downloaded automatically every Tuesday night at 9 ET.
Watched WWE RAW via DVR after we finished podcast production Monday night. Here are my thoughts on the broadcast:
Solid main event that was the highlight of the three hour show. Kevin Owens again proved why he was the perfect choice to be the 2nd Universal Champion. KO can work with virtually anyone much akin to AJ Styles over on SD Live. This I know, my mentor Cowboy Bill Watts would have loved booking Kevin Owens.
Like Backlash, RAW started off their night with an authority figure appearance in the form of GM Mick Foley. Bayley is going to be star in WWE especially if she's allowed to organically get over and not be forced upon the fan base.
Hopefully, Charlotte amd Sasha will have a different approach to their Clash of Champions bout than they had at Summer Slam meaning a bit less risk and a more fundamental approach while establishing the bigger villain vs the smaller fan favorite.
I'm hopeful that WWE can work miracles with the Bo Dallas TV persona as they have done with Heath Slater. Why was the live audience obnoxiously chanting "Jobber" during this match. To let others know that they have a bit of insider knowledge? Sad for the insecure fans who felt compelled to become a bigger part of the broadcast.
Enjoyed the Jericho-Sami Zayn Highlight Reel as Jericho again proves that he is arguably the best, pure heel in WWE right now. A Y2J vs Zayn match will be excellent.
The Best of Seven series between Sheamus and Cesaro is a classic, example of old school, territory booking when top talents would at times work with each other in a variety of presentations for up to a year in the weekly, territory towns.
I understand that it's logical for newly 'turned' Seth Rollins to not change overnight but at some point Rollins has got to be a bit more of an attitudinal fan favorite rather than maintaining his established, villain TV persona. Rollins is one of the most gifted athletes in WWE without question and his work has always seemed to be that of a fan favorite to me. Rollins has some random, HBK-like tendencies which are so marketable.
Enjoyed the physicality between Nia Jax and Alicia Fox who I have always thought is a diamond in the rough. Love that Nia Jax is getting over as a 'monster heel' which will be good for the women's division on RAW.
I've not invested in the New Day vs Gallows and Anderson issue just yet. The former Bullet Club duo needs some much needed 'heat.' Too much comedy??
Jinder Mahal is an apparent villain on RAW but why? What has he physically done or said to be considered a villain.
Seems like Enzo and Big Cass are losing a bit of their buzz as the lost via their opponents cheating Monday night which actually failed to be documented on the show.
Really solid work in a well booked main event on RAW which was the right ending to the show.
It never ceases ot amaze me why some fans are so disturbed at the money that @CMPunk earned at UFC 203 in Cleveland Saturday night which was a reported 500K plus what Punk wil earn for all the PPV's that he sold for the event. The PPV number could easily push Punk's earnings to in excess of 1M. UFC and Dana White made a brilliant strategical signing of Punk was was signed to provide a much needed buzz to the event coming on the heels of UFC 200 and the McGregor vs Diaz fight. Punk wasn't signed to make any one forget GSP, for example, but to help market and sell PPV's of which he did. Plus, Mickey Gall got a great rub and a unique launch to his UFC career as well so it seems that this was a win for everyone in the equation.
I'd be surprised if UFC doesn't find something for Punk to do going forward even though a second fight in UFC would surprise me. Punk is a superb communicator and that night be something that he can migrate to in UFC.

Here's wishing a speedy recovery for WWE Chairman Vince McMahon who underwent surgery Tuesday morning to address an injury he apparently incurred while training in the gym. The injury is allegedly to his quadriceps and knowing VKM he will likely be back in the office this week as well as the gym.
Al Bernstein and I return to CBS Sports Network on Friday night September 30 with another kick ass pro boxing card at the DLVEC which is across the street in downtown Las Vegas across from The D Hotel and Casino. Broadcast time is expected to be at 11 PM ET/8 PT.
Enjoyed talking with @AdamColePro Monday night for next week's The Ross Report Podcast. We talked ROH, WWE, AJ Styles, NJPW, Wellness Policy issues, the Sept 30 ROH PPV on the @FITETV App, Adam's Mt Rushmore of Pro Wrestling, Michael Elgin, and much more. Adam is a great guest and really delivered for us big time.
