A night at WFC in Verdigris

Last night, I took the kids over to the Wrestling For a Cause event in Verdigris. I mean this with all honesty, I wish this organization didn?t exist. By that I mean I wish this organization didn?t NEED to exist. Tim and the boys put on charity wrestling for kids fighting cancer. I cannot even imagine what that must be for a parent. I know it must be hard on the kids but as a parent, if given an option, I would let them magically transport the cancer into me instead of it being in one of my children.

We were pretty close to ringside and I got to see many of the wrestlers interact with the kids at the event (both Chester and spectators). I very much consider wrestlers at the same level as super heroes. With the flamboyant costumes and the physical athleticism, I think the kids see it as good fighting evil. To watch the expressions on the kids? faces when they get to take selfies with the wrestlers, hold their belts, and shake their hands? Seriously, it is just amazing to watch their faces light up. I cannot imagine ever being so good at something that giving someone a fist bump would make their day.

Not gonna lie. I wish I could do it. But I am a self-aware man. I think I have the voice and the charisma (maybe). I think I could do a ?character? but there is no way I have the body or the athletic ability. Now, a heel manager that plays up his wrestler and yells at the crowd? I think that would be the greatest job in the world.

Anyway, last night, these guys ?bumped? hard. There were many hits that these guys were taking that made the whole crowd, ?Oohh!? and grimace in pain. I think with events like this or watching wrestling, people all think, ?Oh, it?s all fake? and they switch off the TV and go to bed. Go right now and bang your shin on a coffee table and see how you bruise up and limp around for a week. They know how to land safely but I have to imagine they feel like they have been in a car wreck after a match. These guys take these slams to lift a kid?s spirit and make him forget about that horrible disease. I?ve said this before and I rarely use this term lightly but these guys are doing God?s work. It speaks to their character that they do this for a little kid. And if the benefit was for one of my kids? I don?t even want to think about it.

They are going to be in Claremore in December. We will be attending. It is a great show. A good cause. Family friendly. My kids had a fantastic time. Support this organization. They are giving back in a fantastic way. It got my mom. If not detected early, it could have got my dad. Statistically, it is going to get me. But for a young kid to be afflicted? I cannot even imagine.

I just hope that one day an organization like this is no longer needed because we have found a way to wipe that horrible, horrible word from our medical lexicon.

For Tim Rockwell, Michael Barry, Mr. Nasty, and all the other wrestlers, you guys are all champs in my book.
