Adams Stampedes Through The Challenges To Meet O'Brien On September 12th
Posted: Aug 19th 2015 By: Michael Hunt
A fair chance. It is all anyone wants. Especially Richie Adams.
But in the wacky world of pro wrestling, opportunities are rarely fair. And sometimes you have to go to extra lengths to prove you deserve them.
Especially if you are Richie Adams.
Adams had been given multiple shots at the ComPro Title held by Jake O'Brien and for one reason or another (usually due to illicit issues), he came up empty handed again and again. So on July 11th, after O'Brien used the title belt to obtain a victory, ComPro commissioner C. M. Burnham came out and gave Adams one more opportunity at the next event. But he said it would be the last one he could give and Adams would have to win.
Adams came prepared, focused on winning the title and ending the year-plus dominance of the championship by O'Brien. But with Richard Pierce at ringside, it is never a truly fair situation. Once again, the title belt came into play as Pierce jumped up on the apron an distracted the referee. That allowed O'Brien to once again obtain the title belt from the ringside table. But Adams was expecting that and immediately tried to intercept O'Brien. The resulting tug-of-war lasted briefly until the belt came away into Adams' hands. And then the referee turned around. Seeing Adams holding the belt did not result in a DQ, but obviously the belt needed to be removed, so the referee took the belt and turned to put it back on the ringside table. That action took the attention of Adams off the match and allowed O'Brien to scoop Adams up for a Death Valley Driver, followed by a pin (which may have included a handful of tights, but the referee did not see that).
O'Brien and Pierce were ecstatic as they believed they had done away with the challenge of Adams and the look on Commissioner Burnham's face seemed to validate their belief. Burnham entered the ring and told Richie that there were no more opportunities he could give out. He then turned to the gleeful champion and said that he figured O'Brien might want to know who his next opponent was. O'Brien was dismissive of this information and Burnham admitted that he really was not sure who the next opponent would be because it would be the winner of the annual Oklahoma Stampede Battle Royal. But he did want to make O'Brien and Pierce aware of who the first person entered into contention would be: RICHIE ADAMS! The crowd jumped to their feet in support as Pierce tried to protest, but Burnham turned his back on the champion and his advisor to address Adams. He told the youngster that he couldn't GIVE him another shot at the title, but that Adams could EARN a title opportunity by winning the Oklahoma Stampede. And that seemed to be all the motivation that Adams needed.
The following two weeks must have been chaotic at the Pierce residence and there were obviously lots of plans discussed and dismissed. Ultimately, Pierce came to the ring on August 9th with a match that had a major stipulation. Adams would face The Canadian Red Devil. Whoever won would enter the Oklahoma Stampede last. But whichever person lost would be forced to enter first. Yet another potential stumbling block for the challenger, but Adams did not let that deter him as he stepped up to the challenge and faced off against CRD 1-on-1. Or at least it WAS 1-on-1 until near the end of the match. Seeing that CRD was about to lose to Adams, Pierce motioned to the back and two never-before-seen wrestlers came out and entered the ring. After standing motionless for a moment and staring down Adams, both of them began to put the boots to CRD, right in front of the referee.
Which left him with no choice but to call for the bell and disqualify Adams, thus giving CRD the win and forcing Adams to begin the Oklahoma Stampede at #1.
The forlorn look on Adams' face reflected the feelings of the crowd as everyone was sure that the hopes and dreams of Adams once again becoming ComPro Champion were over. But Adams refused to give up as there was always a chance of a miracle. And when it came time for the Oklahoma Stampede, that was all Adams could count on. Adams entered at #1 and Steven Cruze, one of Pierce's new associates, entered at #2. And for the next 15 minutes 26 more wrestlers followed suit, entering and being eliminated. Somehow, during all of that, Adams held on.
The final four were Adams, CRD, Michael Wolf (who had beaten O'Brien for the ComPro Title on June 13th, only to lose it back the same night) and Tyson Jaymes, who was making his return to ComPro after an extended absence. Jaymes was the first of these to be eliminated, followed by Wolf, which left Adams and CRD, the first and last entrants into the match. Richard Pierce, who had been at ringside on several occasions during the match, began to panic at this point, running around to the opposite side of the ring and hopping up on the ring apron to grab ahold of Adams. This set up an opportunity for CRD to try and collide with Adams while he was helpless, but as CRD charged in, Adams wriggled free. CRD pulled up short of hitting Pierce, though. And as the too, assured each other that everything was alright, Adams grabbed CRD's leg and hoisted him up, knocking Pierce off the top rope and eliminating CRD from the match.
Somehow, some way, the miracle had come true and Richie Adams had earned one more opportunity at the ComPro Title. And that opportunity will come on September 12th at the 9th Anniversary show for ComPro. Adams now has one month to figure out how to make sure that this will be a fair opportunity for him.
Because after this, there is no way another miracle can happen.
