One Last Chance! Richie Adams MUST Win ComPro Title At The Next Event
Posted: Jul 22nd 2015 By: Michael Hunt
Five years ago, the biggest accomplishment in the career of Richie Adams came true.
March 13, 2010 saw Adams, then under the tutelage of Stevie Caballero, win a 16-man Gauntlet Battle Royal to capture the Any Time/Any Title contract. Later that night, after ComPro Champion Shane Morbid had fought an extremely competitive match against Michael Barry and successfully defended that title, Adams arrived, redeemed the contract, and won the ComPro Title.
His reign would last one day over 4 months before Morbid would regain the championship. And in the following 5 years, other titles would come to Adams. Tag Team championships. Secondary championships. But it seemed like he would never grab the brass ring of the ComPro Title again.
June 13, 2015 saw Adams capitalise on an opportunity, becoming the only person to win more than one Any Time/Any Title contract. This time, it was a Gauntlet match and Adams successfully upended Shawn Shields, Electro and Goldeneye to win the contract. As before, he was still under management, this time in the persona of Richard Pierce. But there was tension in the camp between Pierce, Adams and ComPro Champion Jake O'Brien. That tension would boil over later that night when O'Brien defended his title against Michael Wolf. Wolf was a last minute substitution for Bobby V, who had been injured the previous week competing in Texas and O'Brien was not as prepared as he probably should have been for this foe. Wolf saw an opportunity in front of him and refused to give it up and it paid off as he was able to pin O'Brien for the title.
At that point, Pierce took the Any Time/Any Title contract from Adams and redeemed it, ordering a rematch between Wolf and O'Brien. This caught everyone off guard, but just as Wolf took advantage of an opportunity in the first match, O'Brien did not waste this one. Shortly after the match began, O'Brien won back the title he had held for almost one calendar year.
Pierce was happy. O'Brien was ecstatic. Adams was upset and the fans were irate. Sadly, even ComPro commissioner C. M. Burnham could do nothing to fix this, as he reluctantly explained to the crowd that the contract for Pierce stated that any title or contract in the possession of a client of his is actually in IS possession and is legally his to do with as he will. So the title change stood.
Two weeks later, Wolf received his contractually obligated rematch, but was not able to be as lucky as he was the first time. Richie Adams could not hold himself back, though, and demanded that he be given the match he deserved. So that match was set for July 11th. Richard Pierce found himself unable to be in attendance, so neither man had him in their corner. Adams knew this was probably as fair a shot as he was going to receive and did everything in his power to pull off the victory he knew he was capable of. But O'Brien was not ready to relinquish the championship he had just regained. Being the sneaky veteran that he is, O'Brien had a plan and executed it to perfection. Towards the end of the match, O'Brien went to grab his cane and title belt from the ringside table. Referee Chance Snodgrass was able to wrest the cane away from him and while returning that to the table (and turned away from the action), O'Brien grabbed the belt, which he had dropped in the far corner, slammed it into the head of Adams and threw it outside. He then covered Adams and won the match.
Burnham, who was watching the proceedings backstage, emerged in disbelief and demanded that O'Brien explain his actions. With no explanation forthcoming, Burnham announced that in his opinion, Adams deserved another title opportunity at the next show. O'Brien, obviously believing that Adams had moved to the bottom of the ladder of challengers, protested, but Burnham would not relent. Demanding that O'Brien be a man and act like a real champion, O'Brien acquiesced. But only under one condition: if Adams received this title match and lost, he would be unable to challenge for the championship again as long as O'Brien is champion.
It was a gamble, but it was one that Adams was perfectly willing to accept. And while Richard Pierce as been very vocal on Facebook against the match, going so far as to accuse Burnham of bias and favouritism, this Saturday, Adams and O'Brien will have one more match. Adams MUST win or he will find himself looking on as every other ComPro competitor gets a title match instead of him.
For someone who as waited five years, patience may be about to run out for Richie Adams.
