Oklafan extends its condolences to the family and friends of Verne Gagne, who passed away on April 28th at the age of 89. Though no cause of death has officially been announced, he had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia for many years. He was born May 10, 1925 in Hamell, MN. A natural athlete, Gagne played football and baseball while in high school as well as competing on the wrestling team. He was part of the All-State football team and was recruited to play football at the University of Minnesota. But after one year of college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in California, where he played for the Marine football team. After World War II finished, he returned to the University of Minnesota, where he became the first-ever Big Ten Champion wrestler as well as a 2-time NCAA Champion. Gagne qualified for the Olympic team in 1948, but the team was not allowed to compete in the Olympics, although he did get to attend and march in the Olympic parade. But his love for wrestling refused to die and one year later, he made his professional debut on his 23rd birthday against King Kong Kashey. Thus began a career that would stretch in the ring until 1981 and another decade longer outside the ring. Starting as a Junior Heavyweight, Gagne won a tournament in Oklahoma for the vacant NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title. After competing in Oklahoma and Texas (where he won the Texas Heavyweight Title), Gagne would eventually move back closer to home in Chicago. Ultimately, Gagne would buy out the promoters in Chicago, Nebraska, and other upper-Midwestern territories and began promoting for the American Wrestling Association. Gagne would forever be associated with this company for the rest of his career, as he would hold the AWA World title a record 10 times as well as be one-half of the AWA World Tag Team Champions on 9 occasions with 8 different partners. Besides the legacy of the AWA, perhaps the other thing that Gagne will be forever remembered for are the numerous wrestlers that he helped train. Names such as Ric Flair, Bob Backlund, Jim Brunzell, Ken Patera, Ricky Steamboat, Buddy Rose, The Iron Sheik, and Sgt. Slaughter are just a few of the many who would go on to become huge stars in the business. And while he did not train Hulk Hogan, he did give Hogan his first national push towards stardom. Just as Gagne entered wrestling on his birthday in 1949, he retired on his birthday, May 10, 1981, by winning the AWA World Title for the 10th and final time from Nick Bockwinkel. While he would return to the ring for special occasions, his regular wrestling career was done at that point. Gagne would continue to be the force behind the AWA until it closed in 1990. For his accomplishments in the business, Gagne was inducted into the University of Minnesota Hall of Fame in 1992, the WCW Hall of Fame in 1993, the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in its inaugural class of 1999, the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004, the WWE Hall of Fame in 2006, and the Minnesota Museum Hall of Fame in 2007. Gagne has 6 documented Oklahoma appearances, all of them in Tulsa. The first on October 2nd, 1950 when he defeated Danny Savich in the opening round of the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title tournament. His last was on April 21, 1975 when he successfully defended the AWA World Title by defeating Jerry Miller.
