Jake 'The Snake' Roberts Announces He Has Cancer

Posted: Sep 9th 2014 By: Joseph Zucker - BleacherReport.com

WWE Hall of Famer Jake "The Snake" Roberts' cancer has resurfaced. The wrestling legend made the announcement at an independent wrestling show over the weekend, per TMZ Sports, via The Washington Post's Marissa Payne.

Back in February, he told TMZ Sports that he needed to have a cancerous tumor in his knee removed. Roberts posted a photo (Warning: Picture is very graphic in nature) of his leg on Twitter in July but noted that he was cancer-free.

In late August, Roberts was hospitalized after he had gotten sick on a flight from Las Vegas.

Health problems aside, 2014 has been a big year for Roberts. Prior to WrestleMania XXX, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of '14. The Snake had previously made his return to WWE television in January on an edition of Old School Raw.

Roberts is no stranger to adversity having previously overcome drug addiction. In an interview with WWE.com's Zach Linder after his return, he thanked Diamond Dallas Page for helping him to break the cycle:

"Dallas called me. I?d helped Dallas out several years before to get his wrestling in line to the point where he could make a go of it at an age where everybody said he was too old. He was just Mr. Positive and so gung-ho and thank God he is. He told me about DDP Yoga and I agreed to do it. I changed my eating habits and lost 10 pounds in a week or so. Next thing I know, I lost 16. [DDP] told me, ?If you lose 15 more pounds, I?ll move you to Atlanta with me. I?ll take care of the bills.? In less than two weeks, I?d lost 15 or 20 pounds. I came to Atlanta and that was my make or break moment."

Roberts is a legend of the sport. While far from the most technically gifted wrestler of all time, he possessed an innate ability to understand the crowd and how to make the most of each and every one of his actions in the ring.

The Snake was far ahead of his time and set a standard that many current stars are striving to follow today.

Wrestling fans are hopeful that Roberts can get healthy enough to make an appearance on WWE television again and fully overcome this latest situation.
