First the Belt, then the Jacket: What Will the Devil Steal Next?
Posted: May 8th 2007 By: CMBurnham
Leave it to the Devil to spoil a show at church. The Canadian Red Devil, that is. The FCW Champion. On St. Patrick's Day, The Devil and AACW Champion AWOL upended Oklahoma Triple Crown Champion Rocco Valentino for 2 of his 3 titles. AWOL claimed the ComPro Title and the Devil found the irony in becoming the Fellowship of Christian Wrestlers Champion. Nothing too outrageous there. But the actions of the Devil became somewhat confusing this past weekend as he attemtped to spoil Rocco's exit from Compound Pro Wrestling by stealing...his Varsity jacket?
NWA Universal Champion Rocco Valentino made an announcement on the COMPOUND message board that his match on May 5 would be the last he wrestled for the company, a company he helped form. After some deliberation about who his final COMPOUND opponent would be, Poo Bear goaded him into a match and it opened the show. Rocco had his hands full with the 400-pounder and Poo had plenty to win and little to lose. A victory over the Oklahoma Legend could catipult Poo to the top of the contenders list, but a loss would simply equal one more notch on the Oklahoma Legend's big belt.
In the middle of the match, for reasons that are still unclear, The Canadian Red Devil came down to ringside and calmly took the Compound Varsity Jacket that Rocco wore off the ringpost, put it on and walked back to the dressing room. He made no attempt to interfere in the match, although his blatant theft did provide a minor distraction. Rocco was able to overcome this, though and walked away from his final COMPOUND match a winner.
The Devil returned in the next match to face COMPOUND newcomer James Warbois. Again, no gloating. No demands. He didn't even attempt to use the jacket as a foreign object. It seemed more like a status symbol to him than anything else.
That evening, at the FCW show in Muskogee, the Devil put his FCW Title on the line against former champion Michael York. And at ringside was Rocco Valentino, watching the action. Rocco chose not to interfere in the match as he didn't want to spoil the chances of York regaining the title, but that was not to be. After a collission with referee Tommy 3 Count, York hit the York Crusher and and went for the pin. But with no referee to count, it was a moot point. York got up and he & Rocco tried to revive the ref and the Devil used that opportunity to grab the FCW belt. When York turned around, the Devil nailed him right between the eyes, knocking him out, then covered him as a slightly groggy Tommy 3 Count made the count. The Devil kept the belt and, on his way back, managed to snag the jacket just as Rocco was making a grab for it.
So the question remains: Why did the Devil steal the jacket? Is it simply to get in the head of Rocco? Might the Devil be making some sort of ill-planned attempt to join the Varsity? The Devil has made his desire to challenge NWA-U X Division Champion Justin Lee for that title known. Now that Lee & Romero Contreras are the new FCW Tag Team Champions, could the Devil reunite with the Canadian Luchadore or Jon Davis and take those belts? Or is the Devil making a challenge for the NWA Universal Title? All these questions might be answered in the coming weeks as the players involved are scheduled for a big show in Wagoner. At this point, the Devil has made a strike at Rocco's pride. Only time will tell if the Devil gets stuck in the end.
