Wrestling By The Numbers: Allen ?A. J. Styles? Jones

Posted: Feb 1st 2014 By: mikeiles

TNA Wrestling has parted ways with the man who has been the face of the organization over it?s 12-year existence known as ?The Phenomenal One?, Allen ?A. J. Styles? Jones. The 36-year-old Camp Lejeune North Carolina native started with TNA day one and had been the most heavily featured performer in the history of the company. Jones is a former 5-Time TNA Champion, 6-Time TNA Tag-Team Champion, 6-Time TNA X Division Champion and 2-Time TNA Television Champion. His matches for the X Division title in the early weekly pay-per-view days of TNA helped give the company an identity for delivering exciting cruiserweight style matches which were not being promoted elsewhere nationally at the time. Jones quickly became one the company?s most popular attractions and formed a reputation for delivering top quality matches no matter his opponent. Over his tenure he would main event TNA?s Bound For Glory pay-per-view event twice first in 2006 against Sting and he competed against Bully Ray in the main event of last year?s show. Jones was unable to come to terms on a new contract with the organization and the issues between the two sides were used in storylines during his final months on television. His contract expired on December 16th and Jones started accepting independent bookings and announced his return to Ring Of Honor Wrestling. There have since been reports that progress with TNA has been made in regards to a new deal but nothing has been officially announced.

Allen Jones is a 16-year veteran of the squared circle who first debuted back in 1998 after having been trained by Rick Michaels. In addition to being known as A.J. Styles he has also competed as both Mr. Olympia and Air Styles. During the first 2-years of his career Jones worked in Georgia for National Championship Wrestling and later NWA Wildside once the two organizations merged. His standout matches during this time with wrestler Air Paris resulted in both being given contracts by World Championship Wrestling in early 2001. The former rivals were placed in a tag-team called Air Raid and competed for WCW during it?s final days. World Wrestling Entertainment then offered Jones a developmental contract after he competed in a few matches for the organization. Jones decided to decline the deal and then worked a tour with World Wrestling All-Stars in the spring of 2002 before joining TNA a few months later. From 2002-2006 Jones continued working for NWA Wildside and Ring Of Honor Wrestling before TNA stopped allowing talent to perform for other organizations with television and pay-per-view contracts.
