Private Family Matters Become Public For Goldeneye

Family issues in professional wrestling are often some of the most painful to deal with.

Personal things being dealt with in a public forum usually never end well for any of the people involved. And while forgiveness can be a wonderful thing, when the issues involve physical violence towards a family member, it can be difficult to look past. Mental cruelty can be even more unpleasant.

A recent revelation at the OWA event on January 18 put an entire new spin on one of the OWA roster members. In December, former OCW commissioner Khriss Shannon made his return to the Oklahoma professional wrestling world, coming out to observe the aftermath of a match involving Goldeneye. It was a confusing moment for many of the fans, but very unsettling for people who rememberd Shannon from his earlier tenure. OWA promoter John Crow and ring announcer C. M. Burnham, who were both very familiar with Shannon in his earlier days, commented about the return, but for Crow the issue brought up deep unpleasant memories and forced him to make a revelation about his personal life that he didn't really want to.

On January 18, Crow announced to the crowd that Goldeneye was his nephew, as well as the nephew of Shannon (since they are brothers and Goldeneye is the child of their sister). Crow brought Shannon out at the beginning of the show and said that they had co-owned OCW, but Shannon's actions were what led to the demise of that company. Crow truly wanted nothing to do with Shannon, but especially did not want to see Shannon ruin the career of his nephew. Shannon explained that he had their sister's permission to be there and to try and help guide the career of Goldeneye and Crow's concerns were of no value to him. Crow said that he would talk to their sister and attempt to persuade him to see his side of this story, but if things came down to it, they could settle issues the way they did when they were children. And according to Crow, Shannon never came out on top in those confrontation.

With no recourse against him, Shannon and Goldeneye had 3 matches to compete in during the television tapings that night. The first contest was against Aaron Anders and it was almost over before it began as Anders forced Goldeneye to submit to an armbar. Almost immediately after the match was over, Shannon was in the ring berating Goldeneye for losing and ordering him to the back.

The second match that night saw Goldeneye take on Jonah Turk. In this instance, Shannon chose to watch from the back at the monitor rather than stand at ringside. The result was the same, though, as Turk debuted his new finisher, The Turkish Delight, and put Goldeneye down for the count. As soon as the bell rang, Shannon was out to express his disappointment and order Goldeneye to the back.

Goldeneye's final appearance that night saw him face Roberto Romero. To counter Shannon's presence in his corner, Romero was accompanied by his tag team partner Paul Puertorico. Again, it was just a matter of time (and not too much of it) before Romero scored a win after a Sky-High Powerbomb. And again, more verbal abuse and contempt from Shannon as a result of his nephew's loss.

It's not like Goldeneye is some rookie. He's a former ComPro Tag Team Champion and two-time ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion. But the past couple of years have seen a considerable drop in success during his matches. Many wrestlers will look for guidance under those circumstances. Some will turn their backs on the fans or make new alliances. Goldeneye certainly needs a new direction to be successful. Khriss Shannon believes he IS that guidance. John Crow (and the OWA fans) strngly disagree.
