Burning The Family Bridge

Burning The Family Bridge

Posted: Oct 26th 2013 By: CMBurnham

Bobby Burns knew it was not going to be easy.

There were problems between him and his son, SRPW United States Champion Cody Burns. Cody had become more aggressive in recent weeks. Moreso than necessary. And then, there was the issue about a parental test to prove that Bobby was Cody's father.

So Bobby decided to do what any good wrestler does: handle it in the ring.

At the September 28 SRPW event, Bobby called Cody to the ring for a "fatherly talk". When Cody arrived, Bobby said that he would take the DNA test, but no matter what it said, he WAS Cody's father. He loved Cody, trained him and gave him everything he had. Maybe he could have been there more for Cody, but in the end, he just wanted the personal issue between them to be over and for Cody to accept him as his father. Cody took the microphone and apologised for his behaviour, saying he WAS a Burns, Bobby WAS his father and he didn't need a DNA test to prove that.

That reconciliation was spoiled by the unexpected arrival of Brian Breaker and Spike Lopez. After some heated words, Breaker and Lopez were put into the main event against Cody and Kid Krazy. But Bobby would be in their corner to support his son. And Cody would need that support as he was trapped in the ring for most of the match before finally being able to make the tag. Krazy cleaned house pretty quickly and ended the match by using the metal brace above the ring to perform a Hurrancanrana, putting Lopez down and pinning him. Cody and Krazy celebrated their victory, but that celebration was short-lived as Cody superkicked Krazy out of the ring, to the shock of the assembled crowd! Bobby quickly came into the ring and asked Cody why he did that, but the only response he got was "I'm sorry" before he was on the receiving end of a Superkick as well.

Then, from the back, emerged someone dressed in what appeared to be an Abra Cadaver mask. The mystery individual came to the ring with a chair, which Cody used to brutalise his father in the ring, leaving him a bloody mess. The masked man then removed his head covering and B-Arthur, who everyone believed to have been indefinitely banned from SRPW after being fired as commissioner, stood proudly next to Cody Burns in the ring. Arthur took the microphone and said that it didn't matter what the DNA test said. Bobby Burns may biologically be Cody's father, but he is NOT Cody's dad. And as far as Arthur was concerned, the best thing Bobby could do for everyone was to die!

Those words were still ringing in Bobby's ears when he returned to the SRPW ring two weeks later on October 12. He said that he thought it was just a personal issue between him and his son. Apparently that wasn't the case, but before he could elaborate further, Cody & Arthur strode to the ring. Arthur announced that, after being fired, he took a vacation and did some research. While it was true that there was nothing he could do about regaining his commissionership, he did find that, in SRPW bylaws, any wrestler could appoint anyone as a manager. Bobby responded by saying that, while that may be true and he couldn't do anything about it, he could punish Cody. According to the same SRPW bylaws that Arthur referenced, the attack by Cody violated commission rules. So, as a consequence, Bobby fined Cody 2 months' pay! Additionally, Bobby ordered Cody to defend his title in a Triple Threat match against Kyle Everlast and Xachary Static to open the show.

Unfortunately for Bobby, Cody WAS able to successfully defend his title. And it seems certain that the mind games between the 3 of them have only just begun. Whatever the next moves are, they are certain to be revealed at the October 26 SRPW event.

And family holidays will be a LOT different for the Burns family from now on.
