Running For The Gold: Starr Evades Lumberjacks To Retain Showtime Title
Posted: Oct 19th 2013 By: CMBurnham
It has certainly been an outstanding year for IZW Tag Team and ComPro Showtime Champion Bobby Starr.
Forming Team Bull with The Bronze Bull and capturing the IZW Tag Team Titles from What Wrestling Should Be propelled Bobby up in the eyes of the fans. While support for Bobby had been overwhelming since he broke free of Impact Elite, all his struggles against his former associates were proven to be worthwhile when the tag team championship ended up around his waist.
As popular as Bobby is in Lawton, he is equally despised in Tulsa. Since May, Bobby has been embroiled in a feud with Steven Sterling surrounding the Showtime Title. It is painfully obvious that Sterling is the superior competitor, but somehow Bobby continues to walk away with the title.
And walking away (or, more appropriately, running) is exactly what Bobby attempted to do in his title defence against Sterling on September 6. Every time Sterling seemed to gain the upper hand, Bobby would slide out of the ring to buy some time. Eventually, Sterling caught Starr in the Even Steven submission hold, but Bobby was able to escape. And that was enough for Starr as he walked away, losing the match, but keeping the title.
Sterling knew he had to up the ante in order to regain his title, so he immediately challenges Starr to a No Holds Barred Match. But ComPro commissioner Mike Iles had other ideas. He recognised what Starr was trying to do and ordered their next title match to be a Lumberjack Match. Starr was furious and Sterling felt assured that he could finally begin his fourth title reign.
Unfortunately for Sterling, things didn't work out for him that way. The Lumberjacks were already heated at each other from issues earlier on the show, especially Dutch Hagen and Richie Adams. And while they kept their issues quelled for a while, eventually, Hagen entered the ring, then Adams, then the rest of the ComPro roster. Referee Mark Wilson did not throw the match out, understanding its importance, but as he attempted to clear the ring of the wrestlers, Starr grabbed his sceptre and hit Sterling with it, allowing him to again retain the title.
Unfortunately for Starr, he has been unable to achieve a Triple Crown status as his efforts to regain the MSWA Oklahoma Title were thwarted two weeks ago. Starr invoked his rematch clause against Kevin Morgan and again, the key to victory. After the referee was knocked out, Morgan connected with a Detonator. But the revived ref only made a two-count. Starr then hit a spear on the champion, but once again, only good enough for two. Ultimately, while the referee was dealing with MSWA commissioner Erica, Morgan used the sceptre on Starr and retained the title.
Starr's championship accomplishments are a tremendous achievement, but the true key to greatness is how long wrestlers can hold the titles. With Sterling nipping at Starr's heels and What Wrestling Should Be invoking their rematch clause at Halloween Hangover, Starr will have to be on top of his game if he intends to walk out with as much championship gold as he walked in with.
