Jim Duggan Talks Mid South Wrestling, Dolph Ziggler

106.7 The Fan producer Tom Daly and CDW?s Louis Tully had a chance to catch up with Hacksaw Jim Duggan at the the Big Time Wrestling event at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds on Tuesday evening. One of the clear headline attractions of the show, even at age 59, Hacksaw Jim Duggan is still a name that can get the most cynical wrestling fan on their feet chanting, ?USA!? and screaming ?HOOOO!?

After opening the interview in true Hacksaw style, recapping his win over the Russian Hammers, Hacksaw told us about his most memorable match in his career. Most would think the Tough Guy, would say winning the first Royal Rumble, but Duggan instead chose his match with Andre the Giant in Madison Square Garden.

Being a WWE Hall of Famer and making appearances from time to time with the company, Duggan is still well-connected with the largest wrestling company in the world. We thought it would be cool to get Hacksaw?s perspective on which top young WWE Stars he thinks have the ?It Factor?, Duggan had praise for two in particular and second/third generation athletes in general:

?I think everybody likes Dolph Ziggler, you know I seen him back in the Spirit Squad days. You see that kid, he?s got the blonde hair and a lot of white teeth, good body, good-looking young guy. He?s the kind of guy, a marquee player that WWE looks for, like John Cena, Hulk Hogan, somebody of that nature. I think Ziggler fits that bill. Kind of an unknown hero is McGuillicutty (Curtis Axel). I think Curt?s boy, third generation wrestler, he?s got a lot to show.?

?I think guys that grow up in the business are just a little more polished than guys like myself who came into wrestling blind. I had no idea what to expect. I think, like Jake the Snake Roberts, Ted DiBiase, your second generation wrestlers, we see even more in Cody Rhodes and Ted Junior, that they grew up in the business and have a better understanding of the show.?

Among the many highlights in Duggan?s career would have to be his early days in Bill Watts? Mid-South Wrestling. For those who don?t know, Mid-South Wrestling was one of the best territories going during the 1980′s and Hacksaw Jim Duggan was an integral part of their success. We asked Duggan about his involvement in the WWE?s upcoming Mid-South DVD documentary (available September 10th).

Being a Mid-South wrestling mainstay Hacksaw was surprised by not being featured on the cover of the set, however, Duggan had high praise for the territory that helped launch him into the big time.

?Mid-South was a great wrestling territory, as you know many of the WWF stars came out of Mid-South. It was a great training area, not only did you learn how to do your work in the ring, but you learned how to do your interviews.?

The territories are very important to Duggan. When asked when was his favorite time in the business, Hacksaw talked about the old days when wrestlers had more options for employment.

?A lot more guys were making a living wrestling and it was a great time in the business. Of course, the WWE, WWF days was better for a few unique guys but for overall wrestlers, it was good in the territory days.?
