Mike Iles talks about "social media"

Posted: May 18th 2013 By: mikeiles

Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Foursquare, Instagram, Vine, MySpace...wait is MySpace still "a thing"? Either way, I digress. Social media is a way of life in today's society. Using social media can help a wrestler or a wrestling fed but there are ways that it should be done. Take my advice...or don't. Whatever.

First off, to the wrestlers...

If you are going to "cut a promo" on social media, first off, make sure the wrestling fed WANTS you to do so. Chances are, the people on the form of social media you are using are already paying customers of the wrestling fed you work for. You aren't really adding more "butts every 18 inches". Second, don't use your real name. When WWE wants Triple H to go online "in character" do they want "Triple H" or "Paul Levesque"? On Facebook, it is very easy to create a "fan page". If you need help, let me know and I will be happy to lead you in the right direction. I helped Michael Barry (Facebook.com/Mr.SaturdayNightMichaelBarry) get his started and he updates it on a regular basis. Having a Facebook page is also an easy way for other feds to find you if they wanted to. I am not saying feds troll the internet looking for talent. What I mean is other feds may see the good and the bad. Keep that in mind.

Oh, and one more thing. If you have "heat" with another wrestler or promote, social media is NOT the place to air it. There is no need to go public with that under any circumstances.

To the feds...

If you are going to have a page, keep it updated. On Facebook for instance, create an event and then invite people to attend. Keep photos up to date if possible. If you as the fed owner can't keep it up to date yourself, find someone on your roster that will help out. I promise there is at least 1 person in every locker room that would be willing to help out. Also use Foursquare or checking in on Facebook to your advantage. Tell the fans that by checking in they are entered in a drawing for 2 free tickets, or a T-shirt, or an autographed photo of their choice. Again the people are already at the show, but their friends see they checked in at the event and maybe they don't know about the show.

Also, there are ways to get the events announced outside of your main area. One new Facebook site is Pro Wrestling Buzz (Facebook.com/ProWrestlingBuzz). They picture posters for shows around the country. It is just getting started but it is growing.

I know this isn't much, but there it is. Social media won't be going away. In fact, more and more will be added. If you are going to use it, use it to your advantage.
