Mick Foley Interview Recap from Between the Ropes

On Wednesday night, March 7, hardcore legend and three time WWE Champion Mick Foley joined hosts Brian Fritz, Dickerman, and Vito DeNucci live on Between The Ropes on Central Florida's Sports Radio 740 The Team to discuss his new book and the reaction it has garnered, his thoughts on the WWE creative process, what his future involvement in WWE might be, and much more.

The interview began with a discussion of the last time Mick Foley appeared on WWE television, joining Vince McMahon's Kiss my Ass Club. Mick said that the way the segment was performed turned an act of embarrassment into an act of defiance. He went on to say that "WWE did a terrible job of capitalizing on it because is really was a unique situation. If you remember Vince's face he really sold it perfectly." Mick went on to say that Vince's focus on his own program with DX at the time probably led to Mick's storyline with Vince not reaching its full potential. Despite this Mick said that it could still serve as a foundation for a storyline that might be used in the future and that "it is one good promo away from being a big deal."

It was then noted that the major theme of his new book is whether or not he would regret taking part in that storyline. With this in mind Mick was asked if he still felt that the storyline was a worthwhile project? He replied that had he known then what he knows now he wouldn't have gone forward with it. However, Mick said that he was still glad that he did do the angle "because there were only so many more times that I could come back in exactly the same way and say 'I'm mad at you, now I'm Cactus Jack again.'

Asked if he plans to stick around for a while now that he has reappeared on WWE television Mick said, "it's not sheer coincidence that I showed up a day before my new book came out; I wanted to get involved so I wasn't just walking around carrying a book and I feel that I could help out situations that other people are in. I do have a good idea and if they choose to go with it then it will be a major bombshell the day after Wrestlemania, so I do plan on getting involved after Wrestlemania."

Mick also said that he is disappointed to not be facing Vince at Wrestlemania, but feels that the reason is that Vince doesn't want to get back in the ring for a while.

Staying on the topic of Wrestlemania, Mick was asked if he thinks that some of the things in his book are what kept him off the show this year? "I don't know; even though I'm very critical of Vince I think Vince would rather have what is ultimately a flattering honest portrayal of him rather than just the standard of some wrestler saying 'Vince saved my career, without Vince there would be no wrestling' because I think he gets tired of that." Mick then said that during the writing of his book Vince told him he really wanted him to hammer somebody. After inquiring a few weeks later about how the book was coming Mick told Vince he definitely hammers somebody and that person happens to be Vince himself. Mick said that Vince appeared to get a kick out of that.

Regarding the controversial nature of his new book Mick admitted that "at times I wondered if the book would get published, but in the end they only asked me to change one little line that didn't really mean anything." Mick also said that he had heard rumors about people being angry, but hasn't been approached by anyone in specific "Granted, I was only back for one day. I was kind of looking around and I did mention to Shawn Michaels that there might be things that could be construed as being negative towards DX."

On WWE's creative process: "It occurred to me about two thirds of the way through writing the book that I'm really laying this creative process bear. One of the things that I had doubts about was the fact that you can see that the decisions are just a gut reaction on Vince's part. You know, Vince sees Terry Funk stumble on the ramp and all of the sudden thinks the match is going to be no good. So I was afraid that they were going to think that it showcased WWE in a negative light but I haven't really heard any feedback! Ultimately Vince makes all the decisions, so I'm just going to blame him for all the stuff."

Foley then revealed that on Monday's Raw he was "in the most pain I've been in for about 15 years. My back went out on me during my flight to Phoenix. My left leg went numb, I was in bad shape. I was lying on that trainer's table just wondering how in the world I was going to get home, so it wasn't the world's greatest promo. I looked at it and thought I could have done a lot more with that."

He went on to say that "I told the writers that I don't just want to be carrying a book around. I will if I have to, but I feel that I can help other people's stories, even if I don't have one for Wrestlemania. I have this great idea for Ashley and her Playboy. If you see it being done in the next couple of weeks you'll know that they thought it was a good idea.

The interview wrapped up with Mick being asked about the progression of Edge. Mick said that Edge's progression has been "amazing to watch; Edge has told me that his goal is to be the guy with no redeeming qualities, absolutely the worst human being that he can possibly be. I thought it was amazing that after his TLC match with Cena that he was cheered wildly the next night in Montreal, he took a second to bask in the cheers and then within 10 seconds had everyone in the place booing him. I really enjoy watching him and I've told a couple of the younger guys to watch him, not to emulate him, but to see a guy work when he's clicking on all cylinders."
