Why Jack Swagger Can Shock the World at WrestleMania 29

Why Jack Swagger Can Shock the World at WrestleMania 29

Posted: Mar 6th 2013 By: mikeiles

When it comes to WrestleMania 29, there are a lot of supposedly foregone conclusions.

Everyone seems to be penning?not even penciling?in John Cena for a WWE Championship win over The Rock and Triple H for a payback win over the man who attacked his father-in-law twice, Brock Lesnar. Most are convinced that The Undertaker will successfully defend ?The Streak? against CM Punk, too.

Another major WrestleMania match that many seem to think has a predictable outcome is the newly babyface Alberto Del Rio successfully defending his World Heavyweight Championship against the very controversial Jack Swagger.

The assumption is that Del Rio will triumph over Swagger, which will lead to Dolph Ziggler successfully cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase later on in the show.

But don?t count out Swagger yet. He just might surprise us all by winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 29.

Although Ziggler?s current lack of direction and Del Rio?s monster push as a babyface both seem to point toward Ziggler indeed cashing in on ADR at the biggest PPV of the year, WWE also appears to be hell-bent on pushing Swagger no matter what.

We all know that Swagger was arrested last month for DUI and marijuana possession, and yet, he hasn?t seemed to face any consequences whatsoever for his actions.

He?s still getting a major push, and despite many expecting to see him removed from TV and stripped of his world title match at WrestleMania, there?s virtually no indication that WWE will punish him in any way?at least right now.

It?s crazy to think that Swagger could walk away from this incident without so much as a slap on the wrist, especially when you consider that this is the same company that suspended Chris Jericho for a far less serious incident last year.

You have to think there?s a reason behind that, though. If WWE didn?t have a long-term plan in place for Swagger, odds are that he would have been removed from the WrestleMania match and replaced with someone like Ziggler or Randy Orton.

That, of course, hasn?t happened, and instead, Swagger will still face Del Rio at WrestleMania 29. There?s even a report, from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via WrestlingInc.com), that Swagger was actually scheduled to win the World Heavyweight Championship at the pay-per-view.

There?s been no word on if those plans have changed, but the simple fact that Swagger hasn?t been suspended at all is certainly a good sign for him.

We all know that some superstars can get away with things that other superstars cannot, and right now, it looks like Swagger will get away with his major screw-up. Why? Because of his controversial gimmick.

Since Swagger was paired up with Zeb Colter as WWE?s anti-immigration duo, and he?s received a lot of media coverage because his character tackles a very popular real-life issue. Knowing WWE boss Vince McMahon, that was he exactly what he wanted to happen when this gimmick was created.

WWE loves getting free publicity from the media, which usually avoids pro wrestling at almost all costs, and Swagger and Colter?s somewhat racist rants have already gotten WWE a boatload of media attention.

If that wasn?t true, Swagger would probably be off of TV by now, and his WWE career would likely be seriously in question. But it?s all about timing in pro wrestling, and luckily for Swagger, he?s got the perfect gimmick at the perfect time.

No one currently on the WWE roster?not even The Rock?has gotten the type of media attention that Swagger has gotten recently, and you better believe that McMahon loves it. Despite Swagger?s major screw-up, he?s going to continue to get pushed because of his controversial gimmick and that much-wanted publicity that accompanies it.

That really makes you wonder: If McMahon and WWE are willing to overlook a DUI and marijuana possession charge to keep Swagger on TV, would it really be that far-fetched to see him win the world title too?

Absolutely not.

If this were just about any other superstar in any other situation, a WrestleMania main event feud and world title wound would be completely out of the question. But that?s not the case here.

Swagger has the most relevant and controversial gimmick in WWE today, and it?s that one little fact that could result in him shocking the world by becoming World Heavyweight Champion at WrestleMania 29.
