An Awesome Farewell!
Posted: Jan 18th 2013 By: CMBurnham
The end of another wrestling career came last Saturday. It wasn't a long career, but it was certainly one full of controversy. And at least one person would say the career was Awesome.
Robbie Awesome seemed to finally be on the road back to the top. He had the fans on his side. He had a successful tag team with Kyle Everlast as the Come At Me Bros. He had even begun a second career as a referee in UWE.
But the sins of the past often come back to haunt you. And Awesome's association with J. B. in The Foundation certainly lingered with both of them prominent figures in SRPW. Perhaps that is where J. B's frustration with Awesome developed. After all, Awesome held a title. J. B. didn't. Or maybe it was jealousy over the popularity that Awesome had with the fans, something that always eluded J. B. The two had faced each other several times in tag team matches and J. B. usually came out victorious in those encounters. But perhaps the frustration was rooted there? Maybe J. B. just couldn't understand why Awesome didn't go away.
Whatever the cause, things came to a head after a tag team match pitting J. B. & the debuting Handsome Devil against Awesome & Jose Suzuki. Awesome & Suzuki were victorious, but after the match, J. B. attacked Awesome, laying him out and announcing to the crowd that Awesome had made J. B.'s life miserable for too long. J. B. then challenged Awesome to a Loser-Leaves-SRPW match at the next show.
Awesome accepted after the show was over and began preparing like never before. But SRPW commissioner B-Arthur threw some surprises into the mix. He did allow Awesome's request for a special referee in the form of Kyle Everlast. But he also increased the stipulations and made the match a Lumberjack Strap Match. One thing seemed certain: there would be a decisive winner in this match!
Whe time for the main event came last Saturday, J. B. came out first, all business. Awesome came out second, accompanied by Kyle Everlast. There was a little playful banter as Robbie poked fun at Kyle's weight, but soon enough, things got very serious. Both men catapulted their opponent outside, subjecting them to the pain of the lumberjacks' straps. Awesome apparently took the worse of that as Tommy Toops broke his belt on Awesome's chest and Selena refused a strap, instead relying on her ever-present purse to inflict damage. In the end, J. B. took advantage of a distracted referee to grab one of the belts from a lumberjack. Everlast wrestled the belt away, but that gave J. B. the opening he needed as Everlast was knocked down. J. B. gave Awesome a low blow and then a DDT before covering him. Everlast was torn as he recovered and saw his best friend covered. Reluctantly he counted 1--2--and as much as it pained him -- 3.
It was over. Awesome was forced to leave SRPW. And as he delivered his final talk to the fans, you could hear the emotion in his voice threatening to overwhelm him. Awesome said it had a been a great 3 years. He thanked his trainers and said that he may not have been the best, but he enjoyed entertaining the fans. And with that, the career of Robbie Awesome came to an end.
Awesome leaves a legacy as the owner of the AWF, the first and only MERC Patriot Champion as well as the first and only SRPW Patriot Champion. Its a fine legacy as Awesome walks away, perhaps not the way he wanted to, but certainly as a man, living up to the expectations of those who came before him.
