Former WCW star Brad Armstrong passes away

Posted: Nov 2nd 2012 By: mikeiles

Another sad death to report out of the wrestling community, as Brad Armstrong has passed away at the age of 51.

WWE has reported that Brad was seen by doctors recently for an undisclosed medical concern, and was found unresponsive at his home on Thursday morning.

Brad was a member of the well-known Armstrong family, and son to his legendary father "Bullet" Bob Armstrong. He was born into the wrestling industry due to his lineage, and made quite a career of it.

He was most notably known for his time in the 1990's in World Championship Wrestling. Teaming with another young star, Tim Horner, they formed the Lightning Express and made their way through the NWA and into WCW. After little success in WCW, Horner left for the WWE and Brad looked elsewhere in the company for success.

After a stint as a masked member of "The Fabulous Freebirds," Brad returned to the company in 1992 and captured the WCW Light Heavyweight Championship from Scotty Flamingo (who would later gain fame as Raven).

In 1996 and 1997, Brad went through a series of televised losses and blamed them on what he called "The Armstrong Curse." He didn't win a single match that aired on WCW programming. In '97, he underwent an attitude change and turned on the fans but it didn't garner any wins.

Thought he didn't earn much success during his time in WCW, he did manage to add the aforementioned WCW Light Heavyweight title and the WCW World Six-Man Tag Team titles to his resume. It was just part of 25 different titles he earned during his career. He also held the the NWA Southeastern Tag Team titles on four occasions, three with his dad and once with his brother (Scott).

Brad last appeared on WWE TV in 2006, as a guest commentator on their ECW brand. He stayed on with the company as a producer and trainer to some of the younger talent following the appearance. He was also helped induct his dad into the 2011 WWE Hall of Fame, as he joined his brothers in the induction ceremony.

Brad is survived by his dad (Bob) and four brothers (Brian, Scott, and Steve). As of this writing, not much is known regarding his passing but more details should be available soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Armstrong family during this time.
