3 Members Down In 2 Months. Could This Be The End For SWCW?
Posted: Sep 29th 2012 By: CMBurnham
Things look somewhat grim for Oklahoma City's SWCW as 3 of their top stars appear to be on the shelf, significantly reducing their star power.
Former SWCW Champion Maniac Mike is currently sidelined with a hip injury. Mike last competed on August 25 where he defeated SWCW Tag Team Champion Rick Russo by DQ after took Mike's "friend" Pinny (a bowling pin which he carries to the ring and talks to) and hit him with it. There is no schedule for Mike's potential return, assuming he is able to make one.
Another former SWCW Champion, Striker, is also out for the remainder of the year as he has to have surgery to repair a torn hernia. Striker and his son Maddox Jones had been making serious inroads towards capturing the SWCW Tag Team Championship and even appeared to have done so on July 14th at "Scars and Stripes" when they defeated Shawn Sanders and DeMarco Tate (who was subbing for an injured Scott Sanders). But commissioner Chris Kuhn ruled that because Tate had been pinned and was not a champion, the titles could not change hands, so the title change was invalidated. Stiker's last appearance was a great moment for the fans as he joined L. J. McDaniels, SWCW All-American Champion Kevin James Sanchez and current SWCW Hardcore Champion Kareem Sadat against the Franchise Players in an 8-man Tag Team match on September 8.
But fans were completely shocked when SWCW Champion David Kyzer came to the ring this past Saturday to open the show. He came alone and in street clothes, quiet and reserved which was very unlike his most recent appearances. Kyzer told the crowd that there were times that people had to do what was best themselves and he was faced with one of those times. After consulting with his doctors, it was determined that if Kyzer continued to compete in the ring, he risked permanent debilitating injury. Choking back the tears, Kyzer thanked the fans who supported him. The ring soon filled with the rest of the SWCW roster, including Kevin Sanchez, with whom he'd had an outstanding 3-match series over the past 3 shows; Tyson Jaymes, who had been sidelined as a result of Kyzer's actions and Kyzer's own brother Kareem Sadat. After acknowledging all the roster in the ring, Kyzer made his way around the ring-side area, saying one final good-bye before being removed from the SWCW active roster.
Chris Kuhn did allow Kyzer to become a member of the SWCW Underground TV commentary roster, so his presence will still be felt at the shows. But with these 3 major stars now gone from the roster, It's very much a "rebuilding time" for SWCW. But things aren't completely hopeless for the federation. Some former stars are already making their way back to SWCW, such as Crossfire Morrison, who recently claimed the SWCW Hardcore Title, even though he lost it before the end of the night. And rumour has it that another former SWCW will be making his return on October 6th at Thirst For Gold.
