News:
Dusty Rhodes has been moved to ECW to help Lagana with the creative on Lagana's request. Michael Hayes wasn't happy about the decision, as Rhodes has been having a major influence on Smackdown, which has improved greatly in the eyes of the McMahons recently.
Jim Ross recently addresses an internet rumor on his website blog that said he was asked by WWE Executive Producer/Executive Vice President Kevin Dunn to not call the Royal Rumble match. He said that was categorically false and he was fine with the decision WWE made to go with Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and John Bradshaw Layfield. He also said that a common misconception is that he close to retiring. He denied that also saying he feels he is in the best physical shape he has been in years.
The www.livedaily.com web site has a story about Saliva and its connection with WWE, noting lead singer Joey Scott is almost for sure attending Wrestlemania this year. Scott noted that he came from Memphis and like an awful lot of people in that city, grew up watching Jerry Lawler and Lance Russell on Saturday mornings.
Tazz was on KATT in Oklahoma City Tuesday promoting the next ECW DVD. He said he couldn't stand Joey Styles and had to travel with him to the Rumble. He said he hated the other guy (Michael Cole) worse and would only call him "MC" because he didn't want to say his name. He said the new DVD is good because it also has authentic ECW matches, including what he said was his best match ever, a bout with Sabu in Asbury Park. He said the best wrestlers ever in ECW were Shane Douglas and Bam Bam Bigelow. He felt Bigelow's hard work helped him get over and it was good for ECW to have a WWE star at the time. He noted Flair vs. Big Show is on an ECW DVD, and that's weird, but said it was a good match. He was asked if he could beat up Vince. He said "I won't say on the air" but did say "Vince is, like, 10 inches taller and very intense." Tazz likes to claim he's 5' 9" so that makes Vince somewhere between 6' 4" and 6' 7". Well, he was exaggerating. The host said Vince has "used-to-take-steroid man boobs" and Tazz said "I don't know about that." He put over C.M. Punk saying he'd have been a star in the old ECW, that chicks dig him, guys want to be like him and he is "it."
WWE posted some interesting backstage photos from the Royal Rumble, including Charlie Haas with wife Jackie Gayda and their new baby daughter - Kayla Jacquelyn Haas. Gayda is still employed by TNA as one of their Knockouts.
Several people have tried to push Deep South Wrestling owner Jody "The Assassin" Hamilton out of the picture, but WWE Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis is a Hamilton supporter.
There are reports circulating that The Wild Samoans (Afa & Sika) are likely to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during Wrestlemania 23 weekend.
Roddy Piper has signed to do an MTV movie based on the network's series "My Super Sweet 16." Piper has agreed to the role of a father of one of the characters. Piper will be filming his role over the next three weeks.
On a Philadelphia sports radio station, host John Smallwood (Daily News) had a copy of a 1976 WWWF Spectrum house show program and they talked about the wrestlers from the era. Smallwood brought up what a big deal it was when Stan Hansen broke Bruno Sammartino's neck. The other host, Steve Martarno talked about seeing Sammartino vs. Professor Tanaka in a match which saw a riot at the end. He said he was pretty sure wreslting was fake then, but that match looked real to him. Then they talked about Hogan vs. Andre. They broke wrestling down as "BR" and "Post BR." BR stands for Before Roids.
Jeff Jarrett finished 2nd in the 2006 Wrestling Observer Most Overrated Wrestler voting behind WWE Smackdown World Champion Batista, and ahead of Triple H, Carlito, and Shawn Michaels.
More accolades came in for wrestlers with Oklahoma backgrounds as the March issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated announced the winners of the 2006 Year End Achievement Awards. A. J. Styles & Christopher Daniels were named Tag Team of the Year and Sting won Comeback of the Year. Sting also placed 3rd runner-up for Most Popular Wrestler of the Year and his feud with Jeff Jarrett was 2nd runner-up for Feud of the Year. Jarrett placed 1st runner-up in the polling for Most Hated Wrestler of the Year. Rounding out the group was Mick Foley, who's Hardcore Match at Wrestlemania XXII against Edge was 3rd runner-up for Match of the Year.
It appears Wrestling Society X is interested in using some familiar wrestling divas. Names being considered for the next set of WSX tapings include Daffney, Francine, Missy Hyatt, and Dawn Marie.
Full Impact Pro Wrestling ran a show last night in Melboure, FL. Jake Roberts worked the show. Earlier in the evening, Roberts seemed to be coherent at the photo table prior to the show, however, promoter Sal Hamouni announced that Roberts was imparied, and was asked to leave the building. The police ended up escorting Roberts out of the building.
1PW on its web site claimed they were in negotiations with a major European brand for joint shows that would change British and European wrestling. The claim is both companies are dealing with the final legal papers and to expect a joint press conference on Monday. The only major league European group is NWE out of Italy, which is the group Rikishi has been running.
From the "We must have missed it" file, Oklafan would like to congratulate Rick Steiner on winning the NWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Titles with his brother Scott on December 9th, 2006 when they defeated Chris Hamrick & Rick Nelson.
KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, LA ran a story about the upcoming Mardi Gras Ball, saying a special guest is "current WWE heavyweight wrestling champion Brent Albright." Something must have been lost in the translation.
Les Thatcher was quoted recently on the passing of Bam Bam Bigelow: "I was sorry to hear of the death of Bam Bam Bigelow. I only met him briefly, but was always impressed with his in ring skills and agility. It was sad to hear at the end his was reduced to living on just a disability check. That along with the recent death of Cowboy Lang homeless and living on the streets should be a message loud and clear to anyone chasing the pro wrestling dream. Have a back up vocation in the event it doesn?t work or you are forced out early with injuries.
For anyone who is a student at MIT, Harvard or Wellesley College, Sam Ford is teaching a class on pro wrestling and there will be several WWE guests including Mick Foley and Jim Ross. For more info you can reach him at samford@MIT.EDU
Bonecrusher Bobby Burns' original Texas Outlaws partner Dirty Dan Wilder is back with the group at the expense of Angel being unceremoniously kicked out of the Outlaws by Angel relenquishing the tag team title to Wilder. The original Texas Outlaws have dominated the tag team scene for the longest time including The OPW Tag Team Titles as well as holding the World Wrestling Empire Tag Team Titles on three seperate occassions in their most notable feud with the Mighty Nation. No word yet as to the remaining former Outlaws, nor long time managers Flamon Raymon or Ledge.
The Mid-South Wrestling Alliance show on February 3rd was shut down halfway through by the Oklahoma Boxing Commission because there were too many fans allowed in for free. The OBC receives a cut of the profits from the shows and when the money they were given didn't match what they expected to take, a quick investigation was conducted and the show was stopped after just 3 matches.
From the NWA Universal News & Notes, they announced that Starship Records & Tapes in Tulsa has been added as a ticket outlet. Also, dates and times of their return to local TV should be announced soon.
Finally, NWA-U also announced that NWA Texas Champion Chaz Taylor has made some comments recently about how the Texas Championship is far above any Oklahoma Title and welcomes ANY challenges from a ?boomer sooner?.
