The World According to Dutch: Why was Dirty Dutch omitted from the Memphis Heat documentary?

Posted: Apr 21st 2012 By: mikeiles

That's a damn good question? Why WAS I omitted from the film? I've been asked at least 100 times why I wasn't included in the Memphis Heat documentary that debuted last summer and to tell the truth, I have no idea. I've talked to the director/producer of the piece and he replied that 'they couldn't get in touch with me". WTF? In this day and age, there's almost no way people could have not gotten in touch with me. It's not exactly like I went underground or anything. Hell, I'm not in the Mafia or an illegal immigrant so I didn't drop out of sight. I've been on FACEBOOK and TWITTER for the last three years...had the same cell number for 10 and my email address isn't hard to get. So that excuse just doesn't work. I think I know what happened. It's simple. They just didn't put me in the film. But this is not to slam the people who did the movie...they did an excellent job in producing MEMPHIS HEAT. But they did forget one thing. THE DIRTY DUTCHMAN!!!

So since I wasn't on the documentary, I've decided to do one myself. I've been wanting to do a DVD question and answer session for awhile to answer all those who wanted to know my side of the story. If you're a fan of Memphis or a fan of the YOUTUBE videos, you can find out on this DVD. I am going to give my take on working in the greatest regional territory of all time. Actually, Memphis at its peak was the GREATEST WRESTLING IN THE WORLD. Better than Japan, better than Mexico, better than WWF. Simply put, it was a very entertaining promotion to work for and to be a fan of.
I've named it DIRTY MEMPHIS and its my view of working in Memphis during the glory years. From the great matches at the Mid-South Coliseum to the Louisville Gardens to the old and venerable Evansville Coliseum to the Nashville Fairgrounds Arena...and all points in between, Memphis was, at its peak, a great place for wrestlers to work and for fans to watch. I'm going to tell some stories that you've never heard before, show some video that hasn't been seen in years and give you the inside scoop on everthing Memphis. Also included in this DVD will be a photo gallery that will make this DVD an instant collector's item.

DIRTY MEMPHIS covers the glory years which were between 1980 and 1984...where sellouts were the norm and not the rarity. If you've seen Memphis Heat, you've heard what Lawler, Dundee, Lance, Dave, Jimmy Hart and Handsome Jimmy had to say about MEMPHIS' GOLDEN AGE but you haven't heard what the DIRTY DUTCHMAN has to say. The movie might have shut me out...but they didn't shut me up!!!

Memphis, over the years, has become somewhat of a magical and storied promotion depending on who you talk to. Memphis was a developmental territory long before Vince McMahon ever thought about creating his own. Memphis created its own stars...such as Lawler, Dundee, Handsome Jimmy, Jimmy Hart, Bobby Eaton, Koko B. Ware, Jim Cornette and the Dirty Dutchman. Memphis drew a lot of sellouts for a lot of years due to great talent, decent booking and great matches. A fan would never come to a MEMPHIS show and walk away disappointed. Great talents who would later go on to star in the WWF/WWE all had brief stops in Memphis such as Ric Rude, King Kong Bundy, Jesse Ventura, Randy Savage, Lanny Poffo, Undertaker, The Rock, Mick Foley and Stone Cold Steve Austin before they staked their claim to 'rasslin fame' inside an 18 by 18 foot ring. They damn sure didn't rich monetarily but their stays in Memphis paved the way for their successes later on. I'll talk about all these guys and how Memphis not only helped get them ready but what I thought of them when they started.

Plus no Memphis 'rasslin' documentary would be complete without talking about the Andy Kaufman/Jerry Lawler angle that actually put Memphis and Memphis wrestling on the map. That moment when Lawler suplexed Kaufman on his head til the moment Lawler slapped him on David Letterman is a moment in American pop culture history. I was there...watching it as it unfolded LIVE. Tremendous angle.

DIRTY MEMPHIS looks inside the bubble of what was considered at the time, one of the most progressive territories in the WORLD. From the start of wrestling musical videos...to the invention of classic matches still used today, I will take you down the road of exactly what it was like to work a regional promotion...and how it varies greatly from the business model that is used today by WWE. And believe me, it wasn't all what it seemed.
