Outlaw's New Year's Resolution: Take Back the Gold!

Outlaw's New Year's Resolution: Take Back the Gold!

Posted: Jan 11th 2007 By: CMBurnham

At the end of last year, the former champion had suffered a post-match beating and a match loss, and it seemed Outlaw's glory days were behind him. But he's clearly resolved to return to his former glory in 2007, as he headlined two show on the same day with a pair of matches, each with a title on the line. While some might say that the wily veteran had lost a step in 2006, he seems refocused and full of the fire that made him his name here in Oklahoma's wrestling scene.

At the final MSWA show of 2006, Outlaw was jumped from behind once again by MSWA Oklahoma Champion Michael Faith and left lying in the ring. He'd wrestled a tough tag team match, paired with MSWA Mid-South & IZW Impact Division Champion Ryan Davidson, taking a beating for much of the match. Their opponents, Aaron Neil and Faith, were chosen by MSWA Commissioner Halo, who used the match to protect his brother from defending his Oklahoma title against the rightful #1 contender. After Davidson and Outlaw won the match, waiting until Ryan had left the ring, Halo and Faith struck wielding a metal baton, in an effort to keep Outlaw from posing a threat to the title.

But that would all change at the first MSWA show of the year, in a big way! First, Outlaw wrestled in a Battle Royale at the beginning of the show for a chance at the Mid-South Championship, and while he made a good showing, he was eliminated and "Widowmaker" Angel Williams instead became the #1 contender for that title. Still, Outlaw remained the #1 contender for the title he had been pursuing for the last few months of 2006, the MSWA Oklahoma Championship (having won a Triple Threat match on Oct 8th, 2006). He was still scheduled for the Main Event, a match against Faith for his title; that would quickly change.

MSWA Commissioner Halo and Faith met in the ring before the match, as the Oklahoma Champion declared he was refusing to wrestle Outlaw, despite the legitimate #1 contender status. Left with no choice, Halo stripped Faith of the title. Halo would return later in the show to announcer the new Main Event, as Outlaw would take on Aaron Neil for the now-vacant MSWA Oklahoma Title. After a solid match with a true challenge, Outlaw was able to defeat his opponent with a chokeslam to finally win the title he'd been chasing for the last few months.

Meanwhile in AACW, Outlaw's last match of 2006 saw him losing a Triple Threat match to AWOL. Here again, he started off the new year with a new focus, facing Kareem Sadat in a match for the newly-created AACW Hardcore Title. Who would be the first person to wear this new belt?

The match was a bloody and violent affair, both men busted open throughout. Outlaw drew first blood early on with the ring bell, but Kareem went to his regular foreign object of choice, tucked away in his boot, gouging his older opponent repeatedly until Outlaw bled profusely. At one point, Kareem put him through a table, but the ring veteran fought back and once again gained the advantage with a steel chair.

But when it seemed Outlaw was about to claim his second title in one day, his brother-in-law Michael James (who had accompanied him) came in the ring with a chair and crushed it over Outlaw's head! Putting Kareem's body on top, the referee had no choice but to count the pinfall and declare Kareem Sadat the first-ever AACW Hardcore Champion.

Once back to his feet, Outlaw swore revenge: "James [...] you tell my sister that she's going to be a widow!"

All in all, a grueling day for the man who's regained the drive and the focus for success in local wrestling. Having regained a connection with the local fans, their support may aid his cause. If he holds to his New Year's resolution, Outlaw stands poised to return to his days on top of the Oklahoma wrestling scene.
