DVD Review: Review Of Wrestling's Most Over Babyface And Effective Heel
Posted: Jan 31st 2012 By: CMBurnham
Barry Darsow, legendary journalist Bill Apter, Chyna, Danny Doring, Honky Tonk Man, legendary manager JJ Dillon, Kip James, Maria Kanellis, Masked Superstar, Matt Bourne, WWE HOF members Road Warrior Animal & Tammy ?Sunny? Sytch join Kayfabe Commentaries head honcho Sean Oliver one more time for the countdown show the fans voted on; with two shows on one DVD, Wrestling?s Most Over Babyface & Effective Heel. This crew handled Most Controversial Moment & Awful Angle so we know how good & bad their views can be.
Since I will not spoil the top five on either list(buy the DVD for that information), let?s handle the Over Babyface part of the series and who is not in the top five: John Cena, Jerry Lawler, Matt & Jeff Hardy, Ultimate Warrior, Randy Orton, Edge, Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, Tommy Rich, Wendi Richter, Goldberg, Dusty Rhodes, Magnum T. A., Pedro Morales, Bruno Sammartino, the Road Warriors, any of the Von Erichs, Tommy Dreamer, Rob Van Dam, HHH, Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Jimmy Snuka, Wahoo McDaniel, Rock-N-Roll Express, Verne Gagne and lots of legends I could list.
As far as the top five goes #1 is an absolute obvious and #2 might be too. Numbers 3, 4 & 5 could be interchanged in some people?s minds with the people I listed above. I think all of them would be in a top 10 list as some of the panelist points out. I will say #3 on the list should be where he is if I submitted my top 5 list for voting.
Here?s who is not in the heel top five: Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, One Man Gang, the Fabulous Freebirds, Jerry Lawler, nWo ?Hollywood? Hulk Hogan, Fabulous Moolah, Gino Hernandez (sorry personal favorite), HHH, Nick Bockwinkel, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Sabu, Iron Sheik, New Age Outlaws, Jeff Jarrett, Brian Pillman, Bob Orton, Undertaker, Jake Roberts, Rick Rude, King Kong Bundy, Harley Race, ?Classy? Freddie Blassie(wrestling not managing) Big John Studd, Don Muraco, Dick Murdoch, Bruiser Brody, Abdullah the Butcher, Blackjack Mulligan, Midnight Express (any version), Ernie Ladd, Paul Orndorff, Ole, Lars, Gene & Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, ?Superstar? Billy Graham and other legends I could name another time.
I have major issue with the fans choice for #1 as he was effective but not as a full-time in-ring performer. If that is included in the rating scale Bobby Heenan should be on this list. #2 & #3 are my choice for all-time effective heels as they made the babyface look like a billion dollars every time they worked and both could steal the show on the microphone. #4 I cannot give an honest opinion on since I only saw his WWE/WCW/TNA work on TV & only his ECW stuff on the Rise/Fall DVD put out by WWE. #5 I would believe based on his legend but he could have been swapped out by any of the deleted stars above. I would have replaced Ted DiBiase as 4 or 5.
This is another really well done production. Kip James summed up the series best; it?s all a matter of whose opinion you ask. Recently on the website was an area to vote for Worst Gimmick and in the 2012 preview Sean Oliver mentioned a new panel so we?ll be watching more of this series soon. According to the www.KayfabeCommentaries.com website, next up for release are: History of the WWE 1986 w/George ?the Animal? Steele (January 31), Being a Horseman w/JJ Dillon (February 28) & Youshoot w/ Shane Douglas (March 21).
