WWE's Mick Foley Brings the Funny to NBC's 30 Rock
Posted: Jan 28th 2012 By: mikeiles
One of my favorite shows on television featured one of the greatest hardcore wrestlers of all time this past Thursday.
30 Rock, the show about the backstage happenings of an SNL-type sketch comedy show, featured Mick Foley as Mankind in Thursday's new episode.
The show opened with a fake movie trailer making fun of all the romantic comedies that have come out which are named after holidays which are supposed to be romantic. The faux movie was called "Martin Luther King Day" and featured cameos from some of the biggest and smallest names in Hollywood.
The fake trailer featured Emma Stone, Andy Samberg, Liam Neeson, Amy Adams, Vince Vaughn, Kristen Bell, Nick Cannon, John Krasinski and Jane Krakowski as her 30 Rock character Jenna Maroney.
The trailer also featured images of Matthew Mcconaughey, Ian McKellan, Lynndie, Plinko from Price is Right, an inflatable tube man, the 1995 Quebec Nordiques, R2-D2, that flight attendant that went crazy and none other than Mankind.
I thought at first that his cameo would be limited to his one-second image flashing across the screen but thankfully I was wrong.
He showed up later in the show as Mankind when Jenna Maroney was trying to find friends outside of Tina Fey's Liz Lemon character.
He showed up in Jenna's dressing room and introduced the 30 Rock audience to Mr. Socko. Again, I was hoping his cameo would feature more time and something funny.
Later, in the show I got my wish as Foley had one of the best lines of the show. As the kid from the now famous "Charlie bit my finger" video is trying to sing a song, Mankind interrupts, saying "Quiet, Mankind is trying to tweet about these clowns in Congress."
An argument broke out over who they should be focusing on in the group with everyone saying "me" over and over, until Mankind stood up and yelled "You're all using that word wrong! I'm me!"
Foley's turn on 30 Rock is a small role but one that could potentially open the door for future television roles. Foley has dabbled in acting and I think that with his wrestling career being just about done, he might be able to make the transition.
His unique look would be his biggest selling point, but the fact that he has portrayed everything from a fun-loving hippie to a deranged psycho to a corporate leader could be just as appealing to producers.
I am glad Foley is getting work outside of WWE because he is funny enough to have his own career in Hollywood.
What did you think of Foley's guest spot on 30 Rock?
