Has The Bully Met His Match?

Has The Bully Met His Match?

Posted: Dec 26th 2011 By: CMBurnham

The easiest way for a bully to be defeated is to stand up to him. But when that bully is 6'7" and around 300 pounds, it's a big order to try and get up the nerve to handle him.

And thus Bobby Lambert has been on a tear since invading Oklahoma back in March. Although a well-known presence in Texas and a veteran of 11 years, Lambert was an unknown quantity above the Red River until being brought in to compete in the MWA. In March of this year, Lambert debuted and absolutely destroyed the Canadian Red Devil, putting him out of action in the company for many months. The Devil is well versed in handling all sorts of men and being able to handle himself no matter what the size difference. But his monstrous behemoth would not budge against the Devil's offence and Lambert chalked up his first victim.

The next month, Lambert took out another opponent in the form of Crossfire Morrison. Morrison did not have near the size or experience that the Devil had, but he tried to counter that with newcomer arrogance. That didn't work well either as again, Lambert dominated the match and absolutely squashed Morrison to ring up another victory.

Then, the first chink in the armour appeared in May when Lambert took on MWA Tag Team Champion Max McGuirk. Though not as big as "The Lumberjack", McGuirk was not significantly smaller and Lambert had to rethink his strategy. And it seemed like everything he tried failed. As both men battled to the outside, the frustration began to overwhelm Lambert and he grabbed a steel chair and slammed it into McGuirk, earning a DQ. That didn't stop him from the attack as Lambert rolled McGuirk back into the ring and continued to pummel him with the chair until Jeff Starchild arrived to save Max. A major stare down occurred and the tension between these two carried over into the main event, which was a Battle Royal to fill the vacant MWA Title. With Starchild, Lambert and Krow as the final 3 in the match, Krow found himself eliminated by accident when Lambert kicked Starchild, who collided with Krow and propelled him over. Lambert then attempted to use his power to throw Starchild over the top, but Starchild skinned the cat and returned to the ring, dropkicking Lambert over the top for the win.

This appeared to be more of a challenge than Lambert wanted as he never returned to the federation. In FACT, he appeared to be gone from Oklahoma wrestling for good. But in November, he returned, invading UWF06 and facing off against X-Cal. In all other situations, this would have been a David vs. Goliath match without the happy ending, but X-Cal used his experience and high-flying arsenal to gain a victory over the larger opponent.

To his credit, Lambert didn't tuck his tail and run. Instead, he returned to Ardmore last Sunday to face off against one of the few people in the state who could match him power-for-power in the form of "The Brawler" Shane Rawls. And just like with McGuirk, the frustration set it very early. Matching power didn't result in a significant advantage. Going for amateur wrestling strategy also produced no clear decision as everything Lambert tried, Rawls could counter. And vice versa. After 10 minutes or so of being on an even keel, both men took the battle to the outside, then up to the entrance door. They were so enthralled with trying to prove to each other that they were the better man of the two that they paid no heed to referee Alex Saint's count and the result was a Double Countout.

No issues were resolved, but it seems assured that both men look forward to a rematch. In a battle of two alpha studs like this, the pride and prestige of being the dominant one outweighs everything else. It's a tired cliche, but it seems likely that UWF06 may not be big enough for both men to exist in.
