TNA and WWE: Dear Women, We Want Wrestling, Not Trash
Posted: Dec 9th 2011 By: mikeiles
I am not a hardcore women's wrestling fan. I don't discriminate against good wrestling but I have historically tended to watch more men's matches.
I am not a sexist. I just am not a big fan of women's wrestling.
But something struck me as wrong.
The lack of respect women have been treated as wrestlers, especially in TNA, has really irritated me. The constant focus on women as strippers really takes away the respectability of women's wrestling.
I am not saying the overall quality of wrestling matches are down because of the emphasis on skin. The Attitude Era proved that skin and wrestling can mix.
I am saying the respect shown to these women have declined.
Every time Impact shows the prostitutes (er Knockouts) wrestling with bras and bikinis, I go click, click.
Why do I go click, click? Because I don't want to see women dressed as hookers on my TV screen.
I even go click, click every time I see Kelly Kelly Kelly Kelly Kelly Kelly (you get the point) on my TV screen.
I want to see wrestling. I know the Knockouts and Divas can wrestle well.
Does wrestling truly matter for women on the big stage?
Dixie Carter, you must stop this if you don't want to be a second rate adult entertainment company. In fact, a TNA video was listed in the Adult Section of a video store, according to one of my twitter buddies.
Obviously nothing is going to change if ratings go up. Oh wait, TNA has had the same ratings for years now. I am sure the Thanksgiving Thunder Thong match was the highest-rated segment out of all of the segments.
Sex sells. Fact.
But this isn't porn. This is wrestling.
If you want to see a bunch of hookers with makeup and implants fight, go watch Jersey Shore. Snooki put on a better match at Wrestlemania than all of the divas matches combined (just kidding).
If you want to see great women's wrestling matches on Impact, give me a hell yeah. "Hell yeah!" Fans are saying.
Why aren't devout Christians like AJ Styles or Sting complaining about the trashiness of the Impact Wrestling product?
Seriously, AJ Styles and Sting have enough influence in the company to change things if they wanted to.
Wait a minute, isn't Dixie Carter a Christian as well? Why can't she put an end to this garbage?
Speaking of Christians, Proverbs 5:6 speaks the truth about the true life of the hooker. "She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it."
How does Chris Sabin (Velvet's boyfriend) feel about Velvet Sky's exploitation as a glorified hooker? Is Frankie Kazarian okay with his wife Tracy Brooks letting loose the pigeons each and every week?
More importantly, do we really want to see ODB in a thong?
Most importantly, is putting trash over wrestling worth it?
Sadly, TNA will never realize that the Knockouts can still look good without looking like prostitutes. If these knockouts were paid in makeup then they would be millionaires. Don't get me started on the fake pigeons.
Now I will deliver a brief diatribe on WWE's Divas.
They are not quite as trashy as the Knockouts, but there is one person who could "compete" with the Knockouts if you smell what I'm cooking.
I am sure Kelly Kelly is a nice person. I know she is doing this as a job. I am not interested in digging up things from her personal life. I am going after her Kelly Kelly character, not the real life person.
But how exactly does it make mothers feel that their sons and daughters are idolizing a Diva who looks like a hooker in the ring?
Kelly Kelly wears enough makeup to make Goldust blush. As a matter of fact, her makeup can transform Mark Henry into Sheamus.
Vince McMahon can defend this by saying, "she's a nice lady!"
Well in the Hangover, there is this one scene where a guy married a prostitute in Las Vegas. He defended the decision from his buddies saying "she's a nice lady!"
Is that the kind of role model girls should be looking up to? Really?
When Women's Wrestling Mattered
Forget the Attitude Era, the golden age for women's wrestling was in the 1980s. Wendi Richter and the Fabulous Moolah were great wrestlers.
Wrestlers.
Richter didn't resort to dress like a ten cent hooker in a seedy brothel to be a huge draw. She didn't partake in any bra and panties matches to draw fans. That Women's Championship was treated with respect, not like an accessory to a glamorous prostitute.
She was good looking for sure. But her reign as Women's Champion made her popular in the fans eyes.
Let's go to a more famous example.
Miss Elizabeth was the ultimate heartthrob for males in the 1980s. She was the perfect valet for Macho Man Randy Savage. Many men coveted Macho Man's position as Elizabeth's love interest.
But you know what? Miss Elizabeth had class.
Class.
She wasn't portrayed as a hooker. She was portrayed as a woman.
When Macho Man and Elizabeth got married at SummerSlam, it was an iconic moment. I guarantee you the crowd cheered louder for Macho Man marrying Miss Elizabeth than Velvet Sky or Miss Tessmacher making Kelly Kelly look like a nun.
It was so much better than the prostitutes at the Car Wash segment on Impact. That's what all women's wrestlers should be portrayed as. Not as hookers but as women.
Why can't Velvet Sky take that lead?
She has obvious charisma. She can put on great matches. She doesn't need to be a glorified hooker to be heavily pushed in TNA.
You can still look great while wrestling. I am not saying female wrestlers should wear full-body suits.I am saying Thanksgiving Thunder Thong matches should NEVER happen if you want to gain respect for female wrestlers.
Conclusion
I understand the professional wrestling industry is a seedy entity to itself. I know things aren't exactly PG backstage. Wrestlers have to have a special trait to survive the hardships of the road and the bumps.
But women, please cover up those pigeons. We want wrestling, not porn. I know the Knockouts and Divas are not hookers in real life. They do this because they have to work. I understand that.
