God Bless Texas! How A Texas Thug Became A Tulsa Hero
Posted: Oct 20th 2011 By: CMBurnham
If someone had told you back in 2004 that fresh-faced SRPW newcomer Timmy J was going to not only be a decorated champion throughout the state, but one of the nastiest and most hated villains modern Oklahoma wrestling has seen, you probably would have thought they were crazy. Imagine, then, someone in 2006 being told that Tim Rockwell, nephew of Bernard Funk, arch enemy of Justin Lee and a proud Texan who took extreme pride in mocking Oklahoma fans relentlessly would not only become the top star in Compound Pro Wrestling, but a true role model and standard bearer for wrestlers and fans alike, they would certainly have called you insane. And yet?
Rockwell, who infamously helped his ?Uncle Bernie? nearly cripple Justin Lee and Rocco Valentino with spike piledrivers in TPW, and who destroyed his Super Terrific team with El Super Colibri by betraying the popular masked star (before Colibri went his own dark route as Brandon Walker), is now the man that Compound fans look to as salvation against the likes of Dutch Hagen and Michael Barry. While Rockwell as had flirtations with the fans before (as noted above with his stints in SRPW and as a tag team with Colibri), something is different this time. This time, the 8 year veteran has rode the tidal wave of crowd support to one of the most prestigious titles in Oklahoma wrestling, the Compound Heavyweight title, which has been held by the likes of Rocco Valentino, Romero Contreras, Anthony Jackson and Shane Morbid. He vanquished Dutch Hagen from the Compound ring (albeit temporarily, as these things tend to go), ending his title reign and beginning a new era for Compound, (at least in theory, as their schedule has been sporadic since Rockwell captured the title).
Speaking of the sporadic schedule: Though Rockwell has only defended the title twice since winning it (in one day, as he fended off Hagen as well as Hagen and Walker in a Triple Threat Match), Rockwell has not rested on his laurels. Recently, Compound Pro Wrestling has returned to its roots of charity and fundraising for the unfortunate, and Rockwell has taken on a greater role in those efforts, not only as the public face of the company, but by literally putting foot to pavement, advertising the ?Save Ryder? benefit for October 21 in Owasso. While Tim Rockwell battles Dutch Hagens and Brandon Walkers, 4 year old Ryder Herring battles brain tumors, and the members of the Compound Pro Wrestling roster ? as well as stars from all over the state - are rallying around the efforts of Rockwell to raise money for young Ryder.
Professional wrestling is full of flukes and surprises, and it has been said that any man, on any given day, can win a match and walk away with a title belt?but not every man that wins a belt lives up to the role of ?Champion?. There was nothing that said that beating Dutch Hagen would obligate Tim Rockwell to post flyers all over the countryside to raise money for a little boy fighting for his life, but Rockwell has decided to take up the fight on Ryder?s behalf, in turn becoming one of the most positive representatives Compound has ever had. Inspired by this brave young child, Rockwell has become an inspiration all his own. And that?s just Terrific.
