Wrestling Through New Eyes
Posted: Aug 23rd 2011 By: CMBurnham
Mr. Johnny Walker, better known as Mr. Wrestling II, was one of the most popular wrestlers of his time. Winning heavyweight and tag team championships throughout the 70's and 80's, Mr. Wrestling called it quits in 1989 and retired with his family in peaceful, Honolulu, Hawaii.
But recently, the 1993 WCW Hall of Fame inductee spent some time in Warner Robins, not for wrestling, but for a medical procedure.
Nearly blind in his right eye since age five, Mr. Walker made the cross country journey to Warner Robins to have his vision corrected by one of the best, Dr. Johnny Gayton.
Dr. Gayton, who just so happens to be one of Mr. Wrestling's biggest fans, did such a great job with the procedure, Mr. Walker decided to extend his stay and have his left eye done as well.
When recalling his best and most memorable days of wrestling, Mr. Walker talked about his match against Zuma-Fuji, the Grand Champion of Japan, and time spent with Former President Jimmy Carter and Lillian Carter, both who called Mr. Wrestling II their favorite wrestler, but no match stuck out like the one against Jack Brisco. (Orlando, FL)
But what does the decorated wrestler think of the sport today? Well, moderation has taken it's toll.
Mr. Wrestling II came out of retirement in 2007 when he won the Hawaiian Heritage Tag Team Championship with his protege, Mr. Wrestling III. And although Walker has no plans of making another comeback, he is looking forward to returning home with something he didn't have when he left, the ability to see.
