Dory Funk, Jr., the Hall of Fame wrestler who was featured on many of Sam Muchnick's "Wrestling at the Chase" television programs, is headed for East Carondelet this weekend.
Funk, who held the National Wrestling Alliance title for more than four years, will host a meet-and-greet session for photos and autographs at the East Carondelet Community Center at 8 p.m. Friday.
On Saturday evening, the 70-year-old Funk, Danny Boy Hawkins and Gary Jackson will clash with Ron Powers, Kevin X and Sean Vincent in a six-man tag-team match at the center.
Anyone purchasing a ticket for Friday's meet-and-greet also gets admission to Saturday's card. For ticket information, call 286-3393 or 286-4848.
Funk, said he hopes to be wrestling as long as Lou Thesz, who had his final bout at age 74. In addition to holding the NWA crown from 1969 to 1973, Funk was the Missouri State title and a major drawing card in St. Louis from 1964 to 1983.
As the champion, Funk made 24 title defenses at Kiel Auditorium, with a couple at The Arena. He averaged 10,703 fans (near capacity for Kiel) for each of those bouts.
