Sterling Waiting For Lucky Break

Sterling Waiting For Lucky Break

Posted: Apr 2nd 2011 By: CMBurnham

Not everyone in wrestling makes the debut of a superstar. Some people take a while to "warm up" and perfect their skills so they can hang with the best in the area.

Steven Sterling has been a semi-regular competitor in the Northeast Oklahoma wrestling area for a few years now. Originally hailing from Minneapolis and working under the name "Keystone", he appeared on a few ComPro cards and worked spotty apperances with other feds. He never really brought major attention to himself until this past year when he formed an alliance with Sam Stackhouse and made a bid for the TAP Tag Team Titles.

Recently, Sterling has become a regular in ComPro again and seems to have finally brought the brass ring into his line of sight. Things began to click for Sterling on February 25 when he defeated Bernard Funk and John E. Stone in a Triple Threat Match. Stone eliminated Funk from the ring, but Sterling caught Stone with a surprise roll-up and got the win. It was his first significant win in ComPro and brought him to the attention of the championship committee.

Twoo weeks later, Sterling received a championship opportunity against ComPro Oklahoma X Division & TAP Tag Team Champion Se7en. The champion's manager, Mike Iles, was absent this night so it appeared that Sterling might not have to worry about unfair interference or other types of chicanery in the match. The crowd certainly rallied around Sterling, hoping he might be the man to end the 6 1/2 month reign of Se7en and remove the last bit of influence Excellence Personified has in ComPro. And Sterling came very close on several occassions during the match, which only served to frustrate the champion. Sensing that his title was in jeapordy, Se7en grabbed the title belt and slammed it into Sterling's chest when Sterling charged into the corner, earning a DQ. The champion lost the match, but retained the title and that was all that was important to him.

Se7en also didn't return to ComPro at the next show as he had an opportunity to win the SWCW Tag Team Titles in Oklahoma City. But Sterling still got a championship match, this time against ComPro Showtime Champion Brandon Walker. Walker had defined himself as the most dominant wrestler in ComPro, racking up more wins than any other competitor on the active roster. And again, Sterling hoped to be able to find the chink in the armour and capture his first Oklahoma championship. But again, it wasn't to be as Walker utilised plenty of underhanded tactics, catching Sterling with a gutbuster, then hitting the Defemation of Character for the win.

All this hasn't frustrated Sterling in the least. He truly believes it's just a matter of time before things line up and he can capitalise on a mistake one of ComPro's champions will make. Since he holds a DQ win over Se7en, it seems that the Championship Committee should afford him a title rematch. Perhaps that will occur at the Night of Champions card on April 9.
