Will King Finally Reign in WWE?
Posted: Feb 24th 2011 By: CMBurnham
The King will face The Miz at the Elimination Chamber event on February 20 for the prestigious belt ? the first time he's had a shot in a WWE career spanning nearly two decades.
Lawler won a seven man elimination match under Rumble rules to seize his title opportunity.
The six superstars he outlasted will comprise the Elimination Chamber match on the Raw side of things in Oakland in three weeks time.
Randy Orton and CM Punk were the first two individuals eliminated, and look set to continue to thwart each other's efforts for the belt until they meet at WrestleMania.
R-Truth was next to fall by the wayside, and although John Morrison displayed more incredible agility to stay in for a long time, he was eventually thrown out by Sheamus.
After Sheamus catapulted Lawler into Cena to remove the probable favourite, the big Irishman aimed a kick at Lawler, but with a little help from Cena pulling down the top, Lawler was able to avoid contact and dump Sheamus to the outside.
It was an exciting match to conclude a newsworthy Raw episode which had its fair show of cool moments mixed with shockingly poor fair.
Alberto del Rio opened the show with a talking segment along with Miz and Edge, and chose the latter's World Title belt as the object of his desire at WrestleMania.
Perhaps the most intriguing facet of Raw was a duo of vignettes seemingly hyping a debut.
The clips featured a figure with black boots and a trench coat walking through rainwater by a ghostly cabin to the sound of thunder. At the end of each, a sign flashed up "2 21 11", which is presumably a reference to February 21, the day after the Elimination Chamber PPV.
Speculation is already rife that this could finally herald the arrival of Sting in WWE, with some of the aspects of the video clearly resembling the former WCW and TNA star's garb.
Undertaker, Triple H, Chris Jericho and Awesome Kong are all being linked to the hype video too.
It is a brilliant tease by WWE in the mould of the Jericho "Save Us" campaign which signalled the return of Y2J, and is sure to have the gossip sites and forums buzzing for the next three weeks.
Raw also saw Randy Orton interject after Michael McGillycutty and Husky Harris lost a WWE Tag Title match to Santino and Koslov, RKOing the pair and following up with a punt kick to Harris' skull. This coupled with Harris jobbing to Santino's Cobra suggest that the son of IRS might be in for a break from TV.
A Champion v Champion match between Edge and The Miz saw the WWE champ fall to the rated R Superstar after a John Cena distraction.
The lowlight of Raw was an appalling "dance off" between The Usos, Great Khali and Mark Henry which could already be a front runner for worst two minutes of wrestling television in 2011.
Elsewhere Daniel Bryan & Gail Kim continued to bicker with the Bellas, while Layla pinned new Divas champ Eve in a tag match which also involved Natalya and Michelle McCool.
Royal Rumble surprise entrants Booker T and Kevin Nash did not appear on Raw, nor were they mentioned.
Booker and Nash may be icon of the ring ? but this week's episode was all about the icon that is Jerry Lawler.
