Sting Headed For WWE Hall?
Posted: Jan 17th 2011 By: CMBurnham
The road to Wrestlemania has begun, and the rumor mill is already swirling with speculation.
One of the biggest rumors making the rounds is Vince McMahon?s reported attempt to sign Sting.
Sting (Steve Borden) remains the only legend of the modern era of wrestling never to have worked for McMahon, and the WWE owner would like nothing better than to sign the multi-time NWA, WCW and TNA world heavyweight champion.
Sting currently is a free agent whose TNA contract expired late last year.
With this year?s Wrestlemania in Atlanta, home base of the now-defunct WCW, McMahon reportedly would like Sting to be part of the show and induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame. The company has extended a number of invitations to Sting in the past.
An even bigger scenario could involve Sting in a dream match at Wrestlemania against The Undertaker.
Eric Bischoff told the Monday Night Mayhem radio show that he expects the 51-year-old Sting to remain with TNA.
?If I had to guess, and if he is going to sign another agreement, which I?m not sure he is going to do at this stage of his career, my bet would be that he is going to sign with TNA ... I?m not sure what Sting?s motivations are at this point. I know physically he?s told me on more than one occasion that it?s getting harder and harder to deliver the type of performances that he wants to deliver in the ring for his fans. That?s got to be a big part of his consideration.?
Bischoff also doubts the wrestler would want to take on the more demanding schedule and workload that would come with a WWE contract.
?Realistically, if he would go to the WWE, there would be some additional pressure, much more than in TNA, to perform in the ring, and that would be a hard thing for him to do at this point in his career.?
If Sting were to agree to come in for Wrestlemania, it could possibly open the door for longtime friend Lex Luger (Larry Pfohl) to be inducted into the WWE Hall as well, despite a shaky relationship with former boss McMahon.
-- It appears that any chance of former WWE and current UFC star Brock Lesnar appearing at this year?s Wrestlemania is now off the table.
UFC president Dana White ruled out the possibility of Lesnar appearing for WWE during a press conference on Tuesday.
?There was no wheeling and dealing about the WWE,? White said. ?I think everybody knows how I feel about that. He?s under contract with me.?
White announced last week that Lesnar, who lost his UFC title in October to Cain Velasquez, and Junior dos Santos will be the coaches on Season 13 of ?The Ultimate Fighter? reality competition on Spike TV. The two heavyweights will then meet at a pay-per-view June 11 in Vancouver.
-- Last Monday night?s episode of Raw, which featured the surprise announcement of Shawn Michaels? impending induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, drew a 3.05 rating going up against the most-watched show in cable TV history. The BCS national title game on ESPN scored an astronomical 17.8 rating and averaged 27.3 million viewers.
?Nothing on (Raw) for me came close to rivaling HBK?s surprise appearance, and Shawn Michaels once again stole the show without saying one, single, solitary word,? Hall of Fame WWE announcer Jim Ross posted on his blog at www.jrsbarbq.com.
?While having dinner in Oklahoma City a few weeks ago with HBK, we talked about three hours about a zillion things seemingly including family and business,? wrote Ross. ?During the conversation the subject of the WWE HOF came up and Shawn mentioned to me how much going in ?someday? would mean to him. Little did either of us know at that point in time that Shawn wouldn?t have to wait long and nor should he.?
Ross also said he agreed with a recent Kevin Nash tweet that Michaels should have a statue erected in his honor if WWE had a physical Hall of Fame.
?Was anyone in the modern age of wrestling ever a better all-around performer? Only Ric Flair is likely in the same zip code considering years of service at the top of the card,? wrote Ross.
-- Former WWE champ Batista (Dave Bautista) is currently in Hong Kong shooting a Russell Crowe film titled ?The Man with the Iron Fist.?
-- Ex-TNA Knockouts champ Awesome Kong (Kia Stevens) will be starting soon with WWE.
The 33-year-old monster heel is expected to give the WWE women?s brand a much-needed lift.
-- Thursday night?s TNA Impact drew a 1.25 rating, the highest mark since last October, and ranked fourth in its timeslot in the male 18-49 demographic, tied with MTV?s ?Jersey Shore,? TNT?s NBA coverage and A&E?s ?First 48? and ?Beyond Scared Straight? shows.
-- TNA president Dixie Carter shot down rumors concerning the demise of the company?s X-division.
Carter said that she is planning to ?beef up? the popular division with both familiar and new faces.
-- Former pro wrestling star and WWE Hall of Famer Paul ?Mr. Wonderful? Orndorff, 61, recently revealed that he has bee diagnosed with cancer.
Orndorff was forced to retire from active wrestling in 1995 due to previous injuries suffered while working for WWE in the 1980s.
-- Ruth Bollea, the mother of Hulk Hogan (Terry Bollea), passed away on Dec. 31 at the age of 88.
Hogan?s father, Peter Bollea, died on Dec. 28, 2001.
