Brooks Still Stands Up For Himself

Brooks Still Stands Up For Himself

Posted: Dec 29th 2010 By: CMBurnham

Former Oklahoma referee Donny Brooks made a return to Oklahoma on December 18 and refereed both the IZW event on that date and the MSWA event on December 26. Sadly, controversy could not stay away from the 2009 Oklafan.com Referee of the Year as he came into conflict with an old nemesis, Brad Michaels.

Michaels accompanied SWCW Hardcore Champion Damien Morte to the ring for his match against Chris Morrison. After verbally insulting Milton Winkelman, Michaels began to turn his attention towards Brooks, threatening on several occassions to poke him in the posterior with a large pitchfork he had brought to ringside for unknown reasons. Both Brooks and Morrison had their hands full thanks to Michaels' chicanery at ringside and Morte's underhanded tactics in the ring. At one point, Michaels went so far as to enter the ring and get right up on Brooks' face, but was quickly ejected by Brooks via a strong shove which forced Michaels to fall between the ropes and back to the floor.

As the altercation between Brooks & Michaels continued, Morrison & Morte heated their match up by exchanging a series of chops in the middle of the ring. Morrison began to get the better of Morte until the exchange was ended when Morte kicked Morrison in what appeared to be the groin, but Brooks, who witnessed the move, declared that it was to the inside of the thigh and thus legal. Morte quickly pressed the advantage by piledriving Morrison, then executing a springboard somersault senton and getting the pin.

Despite the win, Michaels wasn't satisfied with the job Donny Brooks had done and once again entered the ring. Getting right up on Brooks' face, Michaels was again met with a few shoves in retaliation to the ones he gave and then, in the moment the crowd enjoyed the most, Brooks scooped Michaels up and slammed him in the middle of the ring.

Brooks and Michaels have had similar confrontations before in both IZW and GPCW. And history has shown that Brooks is not afraid to get physical with the wrestlers. He actually holds 2 victories over TAP Tag Team and ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Se7en. One came after a match between Aaron Neil & Se7en when Se7en complained that Brooks was being biased towards Aaron and challenged him to a match. With Aaron in position behind Se7en, Brooks shoved "The NorCal Shooter" who fell over "The Real Deal" and this allowed Brooks to pin Se7en clean in the middle of the ring. The other instance was after Se7en had a match with current IZW Champion Jermaine Johnson. Again, Se7en claimed there was biased officiating, with Jermaine being able to get some illegal moves in. Once again, Se7en challenged Brooks to a match and this time, after Se7en hit the ropes, Brooks sidestepped him and locked on the DFB (his version of the Crippler Crossface) and forced Se7en to tap out.

Donny Brooks continues to referee matches in California, primarily for the Insane Wrestling League.
