JR's Blog: HIAC Thoughts...WWE at OU-Texas Game...Austin to Wrestle Again?...Great Day to Order From J.R.'s

Thanks for stopping by on a beautiful Monday morning in Oklahoma.

I've got some things to take care of in a few hours so here's a quick collection of random thoughts.

The Hell in a Cell event Sunday night in Dallas was better than I perceived it would be considering the event had only two weeks build on TV. Bottom line is that HIAC exceeded my personal expectations.

Any company producing multiple PPV's in a span of a few weeks time in today's economy can't have overly, lofty financial projections for multiple PPV's however I felt like from a creative standpoint that HIAC was solid.

Creative is such a subjective entity that it will never make every one totally happy and when looking at creative in hindsight one can usually fine something by looking in the rear view mirror to criticize or want to tweak.

Surprised but pleasantly so that Daniel Bryan won the Triple Threat Match with Submissions Counting Anywhere for the United States Title. Miz, John Morrison and Bryan had good chemistry and arguably one of the top two or three bouts of the night. Nice to see Daniel Bryan getting more than a cup of coffee with the US Title and even nicer to see a definitive winner in the match. Miz continues to build upon his body or work and is seemingly destined for bigger things in the foreseeable future in WWE. John Morrison has all the tools to be a star and seeing John become more aggressive and physical might help him with future presentations. I like the up side all of three men that competed in the US Title scenario.

I'm of the belief that the vast majority of the time that having a clear cut winner or loser is more productive for all involved including those that don't win. Winning or losing elicits a definitive emotion that is more real/organic/memorable than the open ended, non endings of many bouts. My feeling, both personally and from what fans tell me when we speak, is that an over abundance of non finishes becomes counter productive. It's like watching a tie in a sporting event or the third act of a play ending prematurely and before its natural conclusion.

HIAC presentations in a PG world is a tough one to execute. Competing in an environment erected of steel 'feels' condusive to be more aggressive that a PG franchise can provide.

Cena losing, no matter how it was done, surprised me. Cena with Nexus will be interesting and I am very anxious to see how that storyline continues. It certainly will be 'new' and should feel 'fresh' which I perceive to be a good thing especially when producing 51 weeks a year of first run TV programming such as Raw and Smackdown do.

Tonight's Raw presentation from lovely Wichita is hugely important based on what occurred on the PPV Sunday night in Dallas.

Building realistic, personal issues over a deliberate amount of time and not getting in a rush while doing so will usually interest and encourage TV viewers to make an emotional investment in the process.

It's refreshing that WWE is seemingly trying 'new' things and one can assume that this direction will continue during this week's TV programs especially Monday Night Raw which is WWE's top TV priority and needs stimulating, weekly content particularly against Monday Night Football.

Interesting dynamic with the three man announce booth at HIAC. At times, more often than not, the trio really meshed and I enjoyed their work. At other times it felt somewhat like a free for all. Some people like free for alls, by the way, but the end game of the three man booth is that when individuals only work together sporadically their performance and presentation will always be somewhat hit and miss. I enjoyed King's interaction with Matt Striker as the two seemingly don't philosophically see eye to eye. With all that said, if not seeing eye to eye is done effectively it can make for entertaining TV.

Nice to see Natalya Neidhart get a PPV opportunity even though the Diva bout was placed in a challenging spot on the card. That will likely happen more often than not for the Divas on PPV and they simply have to work through it. Nonetheless, Natalya feels 'fresh' in the Diva mix and is a talented young lady. I am of the belief that the Divas can provide more steak than the sizzle that they often times are called upon to do.

Alberto Del Rio feels like he is going to be a star. Much depends on how Del Rio is presented and how he executes the presentation/game plan. I do like his look and in ring skills. His persona is easy to dislike which is invaluable for an antagonist.

Randy Orton's RKO is drawing closer to Steve Austin's Stunner while becoming WWE's most popular finishing maneuver.

It was a big weekend in Dallas with the State Fair of Texas along with Saturday's Red River Rivalry college football game at the Cotton Bowl between Oklahoma and Texas. Several WWE folks attended the game including Michael Cole and Josh Mathews plus WWE HOF'er Dusty Rhodes who all had 50 yard line seats. Mark Henry was on the Texas sideline. Yours truly was joined by John Laurinaitis and Kevin Dunn on the OU sideline. It was a great game for Sooner fans with OU winning 28-20 in the 105th meeting of the two, long time rivals.

Saw where the UK Sun interviewed Steve Austin about another of Steve's movies being released eminently. Again, when Austin said "never say never" regarding him returning to the ring one can surmise that is true as long as Steve is healthy enough to want to train to get back into the ring but I would be shocked to see Steve ever want to wrestle anyone at anytime at any place in the future. Could it happen? Sure. Will it happen? Highly unlikely. Let the rumors begin and the speculation run wild, BROTHER! Steve is immersed in is movie career and to get back into the ring would take time away from that endeavor as Austin would never step back in the ring without several weeks or perhaps even months of preparation. Stone Cold has too much pride to ever step in the ring merely for a pay day and not to give his fans a helluva bout.
