New Champion Kicks Off AWF's Official Debut
Posted: Jul 21st 2010 By: CMBurnham
All throughout the United States, there have been people who have aspired to become professional wrestlers. But whether due to issues of money, age or physical limitations, they've been unable to officially join the brotherhood. Many of those people go on to become unsanctioned performers, or what are commonly referred to as "backyard wrestlers". For the first time in Oklahoma history, a federation that operated as an unsanctioned group in the state has done everything it needed to do to become an official wrestling federation. And they celebrated that accomplishment by crowning their first official champion.
When the AWF held its last non-sanctioned event, "The Groundbreaker" Spyke was the AWF Champion. But as ring announcer Ray Martinez opened the show on July 17, Kyle Everlast came to the ring and told everyone that he had "anonymous" video footage of Spyke being attacked. He showed that footage to the crowd and said that the attack made Spyke unable to fulfill his duties as champion. He then pulled the AWF Title belt from his bag and said that possession was 9/10 of the law, so that made him the AWF Champion. And to ensure that he remained champion, he produced an insurance policy in the form of a man named Black Jack. Fans of AWF before its sanctioned days, as well as those who paid careful attention to the video footage, would recognise Black Jack as the former champion Spyke. But it seemed that he was now in the service of the man who mugged him and ended his title reign. Everlast proclaimed that a new era was beginning in AWF: the Everlast Era.
At that point, AWF owner Robbie Awesome came out and said that Everlast had no authourity to make himself champion. He declared the title vacant and announced that the fans would see a one-night tournament to determine the new AWF Champion. Everlast's opponent in that first round would be Awesome himself. Awesome hoped to be able to stand up for his company and tried to eliminate Everlast with the Superkick, but Everlast caught him, spun him around and gave him the Showstopper to advance to the next round.
As Everlast and Black Jack were celebrating their victory, Awesome ordered Black Jack to stick around as he was entered into the tournament and would be facing the man known as Khaos. Khaos, who outweighed his opponent by 180 pounds, looked to be the favourite from the opening, but Black Jack fought an intelligent match, concentrating on the knees of Khaos. Black Jack looked to have the match wrapped up when he connected with a Tornado DDT, but Khaos rolled through and got the pin.
Even though Black Jack was eliminated, he still came to ringside with his partner as Kyle Everlast faced Khaos in the second round. The weakend knee came back into play again in this match. Khaos didn't benefit from the heavy weight advantage and Everlast was more focused and brutally effective than Black Jack had been. Fighting through the pain, Khaos tried to hoist Everlast up for a Fireman's carry, but his knee buckled underneath him and again Everlast applied the Showstopper to advance to the finals.
On the other side of the tournament, Justin Sane met Kolby Wolfe in the opening round. Another massive weight difference between the two, but Sane still wrestled a well-fought match, eventually polishing off his opponent with a sit-out powerbomb.
That took Justin to the semi-finals, where he faced J. B. Varsity, who had advanced with a win over the eccentric masked star known as The Flava. Varsity certainly had no crowd support against the Justin and this may have made things moot from the beginning. Justin Sane put away "The Superstar" and concentrated on the opportunity to go to the finals and win his first Heavyweight Title.
In the main event, Kyle Everlast and Justin Sane faced off to become the first offical AWF Champion. Both men brought everything they had to the ring, holding back nothing in their strikes and understanding that no quarter would be given nor asked. In the end, Justin Sane won the match and the title after a big splash. But after Sane took the title belt and acknowledged the crowd. Everlast and Black Jack began to argue. Everlast blamed his loss on the diminutive star, verbally accosting him and eventually shoving him away. At that point, Black Jack dug in his tights and pulled out a bandana that read "Spyke". He put the bandana on and once again, the "Groundbreaker" was back in action! Spyke attacked Everlast, taking out the frustration at being mislead and mistreated and driving "The Oklahoma Bad Boy" from the ring before soaking in the adulation of the crowd.
Justin Sane's victorious day in AWF did not translate over 3 days later, as he lost a rematch to J. B. Varsity at the MSPW TV Tapings. The loss came due to interference from Jake O'Brien after the referee was knocked unconscious. O'Brien entered the ring and gave Justin a DDT, then revived the referee from the outside and watched as the pin was counted. As a result of that loss, Justin demanded that the MSPW matchmakers grant him a match against O'Brien and they complied. Sane believed that everything was going his way when referee Josh Hogan ejected O'Brien's valet, Maggie Rae, from the ringside area after she tried to interfere in the match. But O'Brien was still able to sneak away with a victory on the AWF Champion.
Justin Sane now looks at his career from the perspective of a targeted man. As the first champion of the new federation, Sane understands that he will have everyone in the company coming at him. But he's prepared to handle that, with the help of the fans. And AWF hopes to continue their successful ride, establishing a name for themselves amidst all the other federations in the Sooner State.
