NEWS
The Big Show vs. Jack Swagger is currently on the books for Summerslam.
Jimmy Golden played Jack Swagger's dad on "WWE Friday Night SmackDown!" last week. Golden wrestled in Alabama and Florida during the 1970s and 1980s and also had a brief run in 1994 for WCW as Bunkhouse Buck. He was also one-half of the World Class Tag Team Champions The Stud Stable with Robert Fuller in 1989.
WWE has modified their opening montage video that airs prior to each broadcast which shows several WWE Superstars and Divas from past and present. One big change in particular was the removal of the voice of Jim Ross who had two lines in the old intro including the "The world is watching" quote to close off the montage. Ross' first line was replaced by a Michael Cole clip while the final line was switched to John Cena's "the champ is here." Ross wrote the following on Twitter regarding his voice being removed from the WWE opening that plays before all shows: "While @ gym got messages my voice was removed from Raw show open. If it matters, that's news 2 me. Been nice 2 have been informed. Oh, well. No worries about being edited out of WWE signature open. I'm proud of my work & it was time 2 update the open. Let's face it, times change."
On Sunday, Jim Ross posted the following on Twitter about Ricky Steamboat's health: "Ricky Steamboat still hospitalized. Stable, improving, & hopes 2 b out of hospital this week. More good days than bad."
The latest edition of "Ringside Rap", hosted by Rich Tate, Les Thatcher, and Mike Sempervive, featured Jim Ross, who talked about his career, including stories on Danny Hodge, Mickey Mantle, the Mid-South territory, announcers he has worked with, and more, as well as what he?s doing for WWE today. The Linda McMahon campaign is back in the news big-time with a front page story in yesterday's New York Times. Allen Ray Sarven quoted in the lead is Al Snow, strangely never identified by his wrestling name. The story is a must-read, only because it's so big and because it's the Times, which for better or worse, is still a news source everyone copies from the lead of, and thus there were a flood of McMahon stories in the last day. You can read the entire story here.
A. J. Styles has been named the #1 wrestler in Pro Wrestling Illustrated's "PWI 500" for 2010. The issue hits news stands on August 3rd. This marks the first time a TNA wrestler has been ranked #1.
Ric Flair was interviewed by Mirror.co.uk and they video of the interview can now be seen on You Tube by clicking here.
TNA's "Hard Justice" pay-per-view on August 8th in Orlando, FL will involve matches with TNA wrestlers against an ECW faction. TNA started their invasion angle with former ECW Superstars without the man who was planned to be onboard by the time it was going to happen ? Paul Heyman. TNA Heavyweight champion Rob Van Dam, Stevie Richards, Tommy Dreamer, Al Snow, Pat Kennedy (AKA Simon Diamond), Brother Devon, Raven, and Rhino were the eight who got the "band back together" for another extreme invasion. Mick Foley, another former ECW star, also returned to iMPACT! after he was "fired" last March by Eric Bischoff. The angle, which also involved Dixie Carter, was shot at the TV tapings last week with the former ECW guys laying out the locker room. On a side note, Dreamer was put in charge of booking the ECW angle. The current planned name for the ECW faction in TNA is The Riot Makers.
The "Hulk Hogan & Friends" show Sunday night in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada was an experiment that apparently went well as the theater was sold out for the two hour and 15 minute talk show with Hogan, Brutus Beefcake, Greg Valentine, Koko B. Ware, The Honky Tonk Man, The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobbs & Jerry Sags), and Jimmy Hart. The show had a $55 a ticket price and was an experiment to see if it would work, and it did on the first try. All the wrestlers after the show came out to hug a 90 year old partially deaf woman who was a lifelong fan. There was a two hour wait for autographs earlier in the day at a car show.
In a recent NWA radio interview Doink the Clown (AKA Matt Borne) said he would retire his trademark green wig forever at NWA Southwest's "Parade of Champions" on August 14th in Gainesville, TX. He said would make it available to a Texas wrestling fan to own and celebrate his return to Texas, giving the souvenir to highest bidder. His offer to the NWA-SW "Parade of Champions", came totally unexpected, but he said later that "Parade of Champions" was the perfect time and place to retire the wig to never be used again by him or replaced. It is not clear if this marks actual final appearance of Doink on the wrestling scene, but it appears from all indications Matt Borne is ready to move on from his Doink character of 18 years, and retire as Matt Borne. No doubt the wig will be collector's item and be worth more than any bid received . Borne said whatever the bid, the money from the bidder would go to charity.
Brett Blair, 18, the son of former WWF wrestler Brian Blair, was arrested earlier this month on charges of drug possession. Blair, 53, told the press his son has been dealing with substance abuse problems for some time now. "I understand the hurt and pain that other parents cope with when their children have major challenges such as this," he said. "No matter what challenges we face as parents, there must be unconditional love and support." Blair is currently running as a Republican for the Florida House of Representatives.
Both Tony Atlas and Stan Hansen have wrestling books in the works. Atlas is now working as a personal trainer at a health spa in Maine.
The current issue of horror magazine Rue Morgue has an article about horror wrestlers. In the article Undertaker, Papa Shango, Abdullah the butcher and many others are covered. There is a full page interview with Gangrel and feedback from The Sinister Minister. You can see the current issue by clicking here.
The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner & Scott Steiner) will be inducted into The Bay County Hall of Fame on October 10th. You can read the story about all the inductees by clicking here.
Maximum Wrestling Alliance announced last week that 2 current TV wrestling stars have been booked for the MWA 2nd anniversary event in September.
