Sting wrestles away problem for football team

Sharing a practice field with a youth soccer team should not be an issue for a high school football team, but until three years ago, that was what Santa Clarita Christian's eight-man Cardinals team had to do.
Cardinals coach Garrick Moss had to wrestle for practice time with other youth teams at public parks in the Santa Clarita area until Steve Borden offered his help.
When Borden, better know as the professional wrestler Sting, enrolled his two sons Garrett and Steven, he also offered use of some of his property for the team to practice.
It just happened that Borden had a plot of land in Agua Dulce, about 11 miles from campus, with a grass field the right size, and the Cardinals have been using it ever since.
"The guys love it; it's a great place," Moss said. "It's great to finally have a place to call our own."
The property not only has a stunning view of Vasquez Rocks but also has a large, grassy hill and dirt roads where the players run for conditioning.
"It's just great place to get the guys in shape," Moss said. "We also have our storage lockers up there to keep our equipment handy."
Borden's property has also been used for actual games. Santa Clarita Christian has used it for its junior-varsity games and hopes to do so again for this season.
"Now we have about 36 freshman, which is more than ever," Moss said. "We used to have 12. We would run out there for a junior varsity game on a Monday."
Moss says Borden's goal is to use the property as a summer-camp-type area where there would be things such as dorms and churches for use by youth groups.
As for making the area into a football stadium for Santa Clarita Christian, which will play its home games at Canyon High of Canyon Country this season, Moss sees the effort required as quite a challenge.
"It would take a huge effort," said Moss. "Not only would we have to get some locker rooms, but we would have to get bathrooms there, too, which isn't easy."
He added: "We are just fortunate and happy to have a place like this. I can't tell you how much it means to us."
