Jim White Passes Away
Posted: Jan 9th 2010 By: CMBurnham
Oklafan was saddened to learn of the death of Jim White, a major southern tag team wrestling star in the mid-1970s.
White, who passed away January 7 after a lengthy battle with cancer, is probably best remembered as Jerry Lawler's original tag team partner. Managed by Sam Bass, the team of White and Lawler dominated Tennessee in the early 1970s, feuding with Jerry Jarrett & Jackie Fargo and capturing the NWA (Mid-American) Southern Tag Team Titles a total of 9 times. They also were NWA Tennessee Tag Team Champions twice.
White moved to TSW in 1974, where he teamed with Jerry Lawler's brother Steve and defeated Chiefs Thunder Cloud and White Cloud for the TSW United States Tag Team Championship. Thier reign only lasted approximately a month when they were unseated by Johnny Eagle & Terry Latham.
White had made appearances on several of the NWA Legends reunion conventions and had been a longtime subscriber (and letter writer) to the Wrestling Observer newsletter. He leaves behind a wife and children.
Oklafan extends its condolensces to White's family.
