Third Time's The Charm: Shane Morbid Wins The ComPro Title

Third Time's The Charm: Shane Morbid Wins The ComPro Title

Posted: Dec 17th 2009 By: CMBurnham

After a year's domination, the ComPro reign of Draven Cross was brought to an end Saturday night by MWA MAX-Division & TAP Oklahoma Heritage Champion "Mr. Endurance" Sugar Shane Morbid. In doing so, Morbid became the first person to hold 3 titles in 3 different federations in almost 2 years.

The path for Morbid to get to the ComPro Title was a long and hard one. Although always regarded highly in the ranks, Morbid hadn't been a top contender to a Heavyweight Title in any Oklahoma federation for almost 3 years. But in June, he defeated Jon Cross for the TAP Oklahoma Heritage Title. That fed shut down temporarily after thier June show, but sent word to Oklafan recently that they would be reopening in 2010.

Next, Morbid took out Justin Lee, capturing the MWA MAX-Division Title in the process. Morbid is interesting in that, while not the typical build or style for X-Division Title reigns, he has still held X Titles in 4 differerent Oklahoma federations.

But while those victories were easy to achieve, taking down "The Annihilator" proved to be much more difficult. Morbid was unable to focus on his goal for much of the first half of the year because he was having to deal with competitors such as Cast-Iron Cothern and Dexter Hardaway. But when he resolved his issues with those men, he set Draven in his sights and never let up.

Unfortunately, it looked Draven was never going to let go of that title and, between his ruthless tactics and manager Stevie Caballero's sneaky ingenuity, Draven was able to walk away from their first two confrontations with the belt still intact. After the second time, Stevie declared that there would be no more title shots for Shane as long as Draven was still champion. ComPro owner Mike Two was compelled to uphold this agreement, but countered by entering both Shane and Draven into the Oklahoma Stampede. The winner of the Stampede was guaranteed a shot at any title he wanted. Morbid entered at #1 (by his own choice) and went through 29 other stars (including Draven Cross, whom he eliminated last) in order to earn one last title shot. Then, it just became an issue of waiting.

On December 5, Morbid and Shane met in the ring to sign the contract for thier match. Morbid was invited out first and Mike Two joked with him by saying he could have an easy night and take on ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Goldeneye for the belt. Morbid said he didn't want to do that and while he could take out both members of the ComPro Tag Team Champions, Dawn of Extreme, at the same time, he didn't want to do that either. He wanted Draven Cross and he didn't want to wait until Night of Champions. He wanted to get it done right then. Mike Two wouldn't agree to that and told Shane to rest up. He then called Draven Cross out and had him sign the contract as well. After both men signed, Mike Two ordered them to stay away from each other for the rest of the night. That order would not be complied with.

Athough Mike Two had given Morbid the night off, he had given Cross the opportunity to become a dual champion by having him face ComPro Showtime Champion The Canadian Red Devil. But the match had barely begun before J. P. Steele attacked the Devil. This led to a 2-on-1 situation before Morbid came to the rescue. Mike Two was infuriated, but saw that these men wanted to get their hands on each other, so he made a tag team main event: Morbid & the Devil vs. Steele & Cross. During that match, Draven did everything he could to avoid being in the ring at the same time as Morbid. Ultimately, he abandoned his partner and walked away from the match, allowing Morbid to hit a devastating belly-to-back suplex on Steele and win the match.

While Draven could avoid Morbid in the tag team match, there was no way to avoid him in their championship encounter. Morbid knew this was it. This was his last opportunty. There was no other reprieve. He had to make good on this or look at other title options. And there was most certainly a "big match" feel to this encounter, embellished by Japanese style introductions (including streamers thrown at the ring when Morbid was introduced).

Morbid could typically outpower his opponents, but not Draven. Those tactics failed. So he relied on hard-hitting, smashmouth moves to wear the big man down. Much of the match was spent with one man beating the other in the various corners of the ring. The end came rather suddenly as Draven missed a corner splash, Morbid climbed to the top rope, hit a Senton splash, then covered the champion and got the 3-count. The crowd erupted into applause as finally, Shane Morbid was the ComPro Heavyweight Champion. And Stevie Caballero erupted into tears, as the 1-plus year reign of Draven Cross was ended and the last vestige of championship golc that he had control of slipped from his fingers.

Morbid restablishes a Triple Crown of Championships and is the first wrestler to do so since Rocco Valentino, who held the NWA-U, FCW & ComPro Titles in 2007.

Draven Cross had won the ComPro Title on December 6, 2008. With his loss, MSWA Mid-South Champion Aaron Neil becomes the longest current reigning champion, having won his title on March 15, 2009.

As the crowd chanted Shane's name, Mike Two came to the ring and congratulated Shane on his win, saying that his journey was complete...or perhaps it was just beginning. Now, with the weight of three championshp titles to defend, Shane Morbid must enter 2010 with three times the responsibility. But that's OK with him. Because he has proven that he could climb the ultimate mountain and come down rewarded. Shane eagerly awaits the challenges that the new title and new contenders will bring him in the new year.
